About Karen

Hi, I'm Karen, a native speaker with 7 years of teaching experience.

My goal is to help you speak with confidence in real-life situations—whether you're meeting a new Japanese person, ordering food at a sushi restaurant, or asking for directions while travelling there.

In our lessons, you'll learn essential words and phrases, and then we’ll put them into action through fun, interactive activities like role-play, card games, boardgames, pictionary, and more—because fun makes it stick!
I try to make my lessons so enjoyable that you always look forward to the next one!

About the lesson

Let me share a little about my own language learning experience.

I remember once being in a supermarket in Sweden, wanting to ask the staff where the plaster was. I knew exactly what to say—“Var är plåster?”—but I just couldn’t bring myself to ask.

I kept worrying: "Is my pronunciation correct?", "What if he doesn't understand me?", "What if I can't understand his reply?"
In the end, I didn’t ask the staff at all.

At the time, I was taking weekly Swedish classes at university. But I didn't get many chances to speak in class because the focus was mainly on the textbook.
I liked my teacher because he was incredibly kind, and I know some of my classmates thrived with his approach, but the traditional textbook-based approach wasn’t enough for me.

That’s why I focus on practical speaking practise in my lessons—because I believe learning a language is about gaining the confidence to use those words in real conversations.

Eventually, I started challenging myself to speak Swedish in daily life. Looking back, though, taking classes with a strong focus on speaking skills would have been invaluable.

I hope to offer the kind of lessons I wished for—one where you feel encouraged, supported, and comfortable to practise, make mistakes, and grow.

Perfect! Amazing teacher! Karen uses great learning tools to help my girl. She does fun activities while learning. My daughter mentions that she always reviews what they learn from past lessons and does crafts while learning! My daughter said that her teaching really hypes her up for the next lessons and never wanting to skip another lesson!
