Everything we do is chemistry.

From the food we eat to the energy we burn through movement, and the discovery of new medicines to the breakthrough of vaccines, chemistry is a universal concept present in our everyday lives.

How can we breathe if chemical reactions do not occur?

It is only through an understanding of chemistry that we can really comprehend everything about us and around us since chemistry concerns the study of the properties and reactions of matter - the very building blocks that give us life.

A major science subject taught in schools, let's look at the Chemistry SPM format and discover what learning opportunities you will have in the new syllabus. You can also find out what you'll be tested on when you sit for the SPM 2022 Chemistry exam.

Why does Chemistry SPM matter?

You may be wondering why you should be taking SPM Chemistry in school: does it even matter? Well, don't be surprised to know that it really does matter! Here are some reasons why you should learn chemistry (and pay attention in class for study tips!):

A central science

Are you aware that chemistry is the joining force for various fields in science? It is through chemistry that we can relate mathematics to physics, or biology to medicine. When we understand the nature of chemicals and how chemical processes occur, we gain knowledge of the physical and biological phenomena that happen all around us. So, chemistry literally translates into everything there is to know about the natural world.

Useful to daily life

Learning about topics in Chemistry SPM, such as the carbon compounds chapter in Form 5 Chemistry, explains how to best use the tools around you to make life easier. Want to know the best ways to preserve food? Which disinfectants work for basic home cleaning? What drugs will help you or harm you? You can learn about these and more when you take SPM Chemistry.

Solutions to global challenges

As the world is experiencing the adverse effects of climate change, so are we moving towards green energy. This is only possible with chemistry because it helps us generate processes for production and manufacturing purposes without harming the environment. However, chemistry tackles not only environmental issues, but also other global challenges like food insecurity, hygiene and sanitation, and conservation efforts.

What is in Chemistry Form 4 KSSM?

Do you know the study tips for Chemistry Form 4? Keep in mind that there have been changes made when the new Form 4 syllabus was introduced in SPM 2021. For instance, topics related to electrochemistry and synthetic polymer have been moved to the Form 5 syllabus. Additionally, topics related to acids, bases and salts are now found in a single chapter.

Introduction to Chemistry

In this first chapter, students learn about what chemistry is in general. This includes chemicals found in daily life, chemistry-related fields and careers, and scientific methods in chemistry.

Matter and the Atomic Structure

Next, students study what matter is and its physical states, as well as the types of particles that make up matter. This largely includes an understanding of the atomic structure.

Formula and Chemical Equations

Read about the mole concept and basic chemical equations such as the equations for relative atomic mass and relative molecular mass. Students also learn how to form chemical formulae.

Periodic Table

How are elements arranged in the periodic table? Take note also of special groups of elements like Group 1, Group 17 and Group 18. You may also want to read up on elements in Period 3.

Chemical Bonds

Chemical bonds, ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds... what are they? Learn about the role of these bonds in the formation of compounds, as well as the different physical properties of bonds.

Acids, Bases and Salt

This chapter goes beyond simply acids and alkalis - ponder about the relationships between acids and alkalis with pH values, neutralisation, and the properties of salts.

Rate of Reaction

Are you familiar with the collision theory? Students are exposed to the average and instantaneous rate of reaction equations, along with the factors that affect these rates of reaction.

Manufactured Substances in Industry

In this eighth and final chapter, master important manufactured substances such as alloys, glass, ceramics, and composite materials.

How to study KSSM Chemistry Form 5?

Now that you've mastered Chemistry Form 4, let's look at what you'll face in Chemistry Form 5.

Redox Equilibrium

Redox reactions refer to the reactions of oxidation and reduction. Learn about what an oxidation number is, along with voltaic cells and conditions for rusting.

Carbon Compounds

Various carbon compounds make up this second chapter in Chemistry Form 5, such as alcohols, alkanes, alkenes, carboxylic acids, and esters.

Thermochemistry

What are exothermic and endothermic reactions? Read about different heat equations, including those of the heat of reaction, heat of precipitation, heat of displacement, and heat of combustion.

Polymer

Polymers are large molecules in the form of long chains and have a high relative molecular mass. Also, talk about the differences between natural and synthetic polymers.

Consumer and Industrial Chemistry

In this last chapter, students will read up about oils and fats, cleaning agents, food additives, medicines, cosmetics, and nanotechnology - how does chemistry contribute to their manufacture?

Just like the Form 4 syllabus, the new Chemistry Form 5 syllabus comes with several updates. The chapter on redox equilibrium, for instance, replaced the old chapter on rate reactions. This change is significant because students have the opportunity to learn about standard electrode potential, which was not available in the previous syllabus. The chapter on polymers is also new to students sitting for SPM 2022.

Careers after Chemistry SPM
You can take on many jobs in chemistry, such as a geochemist. Source: usgs.gov

What can I do after SPM Chemistry?

So you've decided you do like chemistry, after all! There are many types of careers you can further into upon completing Chemistry SPM (and the other SPM 2022 subjects, of course), but we've had the pleasure of listing down some attractive jobs in the field:

Geochemist

If you like working with natural materials, then a geochemist might be the right career for you. Geochemists study and analyse natural materials like soil, rock and minerals to determine Earth's composition, which tells us how old certain geological locations are or how they are structured. This information is then translated into data such as land surveys and technical reports - helping oil companies, environmental agencies, governmental bodies and research facilities in their work.

Forensic Scientist

Perhaps crime scene investigations are for you. A forensic scientist draws upon knowledge from the sciences, such as chemistry, to identify and assess physical evidence during an investigation. Techniques such as genetic fingerprinting and mass spectrometry are employed by forensic scientists to assist the police in solving these investigations. Sometimes, forensic scientists can even be called to present their evidence in court!

Toxicologist

How do we know if chemicals are safe for use? A toxicologist is involved in the research of how toxic substances produce their effects and whether these effects can be harmful to life. Toxicologists answer these queries by designing and carefully carrying out controlled studies of chemicals that hold social and economic importance to society. Toxicologists then assess the likelihood that these chemicals pose a significant threat to human health, other organisms, or the environment.

Materials Scientist

Are the materials being used to make products effective? When a materials scientist determines the effectiveness of natural and synthetic materials used in products, they can tell if a product's material needs to be replaced or modified. As the work of materials scientists are valuable to many parties, you can find them working in various work environments: pharmaceutical firms, chemical manufacturing companies, electronics manufacturers and testing laboratories are just some of these places.

If you can understand the Chemistry SPM syllabus for 2022, and build on your passion for the field, we can guarantee that you will ace this subject!
