We often pose the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, or SPM, to be one of the most difficult examinations that one has to go through in our country's education system. With the pandemic still ongoing and recent worries about the spread of its variants, people are left to wonder whether students are really up to the task of sitting for these high-stake examinations, while still being able to produce excellent results.

SPM Chemistry has to be one of the most daunting papers in the exam, especially with its high unpredictability of questions that can be thrown at students. Omicron or not, we're here to break down this Chemistry subject so that you can get a better grasp of what's to come in SPM - beyond just the periodic table elements.

You may want to know how the new SPM Chemistry format for 2022 differs from the old format.

What is the Chemistry Form 4 and Form 5 syllabus?

If you've been following Chemistry Form 4 and Form 5 closely, you'll notice that there have been some changes made to the existing syllabus (which started its application with candidates sitting for SPM 2021). Here's a breakdown of the chapters in both Form 4 and Form 5 Chemistry:

Chemistry Form 4

  • Introduction
  • Matter and the Atomic Structure
  • Formula and Chemical Equations
  • Periodic Table
  • Chemical Bonds
  • Acids, Bases and Salt
  • Rate of Reaction
  • Manufactured Substances in Industries

Chemistry Form 5

  • Redox Equilibrium
  • Carbon Compound
  • Thermochemistry
  • Polymer
  • Consumer and Industrial Chemistry

Unlike the old Chemistry Form 4 syllabus, the Electrochemistry chapter is now incorporated into the Form 5 syllabus, along with one Form 4 subtopic, Synthetic Polymer, which has also been moved from the Form 4 to Form 5 syllabus. Acids, Bases and Salts are now also taught in one single chapter (previously, these topics were split into two chapters).

When you have made it to the Chemistry Form 5 syllabus, note that the Rate Reaction chapter is now replaced with Redox Equilibrium. This is something new for students who are taking SPM 2021 and beyond because the chapter now includes standard electrode potential, which was not taught to students in the old syllabus. Aside from Redox Equilibrium, Polymer is a completely new chapter added to the syllabus, promising new knowledge for Form 5 students.

How do you pass Chemistry SPM?

Now that we've taken a brief look at the Chemistry SPM syllabus, let's think about how we're going to get you through the SPM exam. It's time to see what the Chemistry SPM papers you'll be sitting for in SPM 2022 are all about:

Chemistry Paper 1

Your first Chemistry paper is an objective paper in the form of multiple-choice questions. A total of 40 questions will need to be answered in a time frame of 40 minutes. That should give you roughly 1 minute per question, however, remember to save some time in the end to double-check your answer. You wouldn't want to spend 1 minute per question and end up with no time to check if you've written your name down on the paper!

Chemistry Paper 2

Another written paper, this one is a subjective paper that will require you to answer structured questions, as well as provide open and closed responses to its questions. The paper is split into three sections: Section A, Section B, and Section C. For a total of 100 marks, you will have to answer this paper within 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Chemistry Paper 3

The final paper is a practical exam, so it's time to put your hands-on knowledge to the test. You will be given one guided task and one non-guided task to work on. This means that for one task, you will be given instructions to carry out an experiment, whereas, for the other task, you will have to plan and conduct the experiment yourself! 1 hour and 45 minutes will be provided for you to complete the tasks.

Remember that you are also allowed to bring your scientific calculator when sitting for all three papers! You can even find out everything about the SPM Chemistry exam here.

What is the SPM Chemistry marking scheme?

You can't ace your papers or flex on your memory of the periodic table elements if you haven't checked how the exam is graded. Did you know that SPM candidates have lost marks in their papers because they did not follow the marking scheme, even though their answers demonstrate their knowledge of the subject?

Along with the updates to the syllabus and exam papers, changes have also been made to the allocation of marks for each paper. Take a look:

Chemistry Paper 1

The weightage of this paper is 40 marks, meaning each question is worth one mark in this paper. You will be asked to respond to all the questions in this paper, so remember to answer all of them.

Chemistry Paper 2

Section A is worth 60 marks, while Section B and Section C are each worth 20 marks. Additionally, while Section A requires you to answer all of its eight structured questions, Section B will ask you to answer only one of its two essay questions. Section C has only 1 essay question, which you are required to answer.

Chemistry Paper 3

The weightage for this last paper is 30 marks, and you will have to carry out both the tasks in the paper. One of the good study tips worth noting is that as this is a practical paper, less focus is placed on writing and more of your energy will be directed towards carrying out experiments.

Apart from knowing how the marks are allocated, it is equally important that you get the correct keywords down on paper as well as practise with SPM trial papers. How about more study tips when you read our latest marking scheme for Chemistry SPM 2022?
