I am seriously frustrated by the cancellation of PT3 Assessment. Why did they cancel it? They can instead use an online platform to let the students take the assessment. Probably it might be because 34% of students are currently unable to attend online classes due to internet problems, and don't have any access to smartphones or computers.

Even the government funded tablets haven’t reached them yet.

Life must still go on. Education still needs to continue. We can’t stop learning.

“Never stop learning because life never stops teaching”

-Lin Pernille

If you wish to be somebody, there are 2 ways of learning. Through books or through experience.

In any assessment or tests that you are going to take, you should also learn how the examiners mark your answers. Sometimes, you can easily calculate the answer in your mind and if you don't show any steps or methods used on the paper, you could end up getting zero marks.

Knowing about the exam is always being ignored by many.  We should take extra effort to learn the basis of the exam, marking schemes and how the marks are allocated. We usually focus more on making sure we get the correct answers. You should start asking how well you know about the details of the exam you are going to sit for?

I always told my students to show every single step that matters to get the answer. Sometimes, even if you get the answer wrong, you could still get a mark/s for the correct steps and methods that you showed.

So, please don't be lazy!

What is the Latest PT3 Mathematics Paper Marking Scheme?

calculating money and numbers
Mathematics are around us, whether in calculating your money or looking at the time. (Source: Pixabay)

“Without Mathematics, there is nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”

-Shakuntala Devi

The same wise quote has been told many times. Everything in our life is numbers. Even if you are trying to be non-judgemental, or do things qualitatively, however, it might still involve numbers in some ways or another.

There is only 1 paper that you need to sit for mathematics in PT3 assessment. The time duration is 2 hours only with a total of 100 marks. The paper is divided into 3 sections where each section has a different construction and marking scheme.

The weightage for section A and B contains 20 marks, respectively,  while section C with the highest weightage of 60 marks. This will total up to 100 percent.

In Section A, you will answer 20 objective questions. Each question will give you 1 mark.

In Section B, there are 5 questions with a total of 20 marks. Each question will give you 4 marks.

Lastly, in Section C, there are 6 major questions with a few smaller questions. Each question gives you 10 marks. The weightage of each smaller question might differ according to the level of intensity, it can be as low as 1 mark for a question and as high as 6 marks per question.

Let us see  how can you target A in your PT3 Mathematics. Meanwhile, check out the tips on how to answer PT3 Mathematics questions.

How to Target A for PT3 Mathematics?

Getting an A is definitely not easy. What should you do to improve your grade? (Source: NST)

Tell yourself that there is no ‘im’ in possible. Everything is possible including getting A in your assessment.

I know the process is not easy for everyone, but with an extra effort by doing more practice and focusing more in class, you can always achieve anything that you have desires.

The question is how to target A?

First you need to know the marking aggregate to get each grade.

  • 85-100: A - Distinction
  • 70-84     : B - Honor
  • 60-69     : C - Good
  • 50-59     : D - Satisfaction
  • 40-49     : E – Minimum Achievement
  • 0-39     : E – Have not reached the minimum levels
  • TH     : Absent

So, which one would you like to target?

Let me answer it for you, definitely A! Fret not, I’ll give you tips along the way.

Marks to get A in PT3 Mathematics Section A

Since section A is the objective questions, and the intensity level is low. This means the questions are easy to answer. All the questions are the basic mathematics that only need you to understand and memorize the concept to solve the questions.

Here you should spend roughly 20 minutes, 1 minute per question. Do not waste time when you find the question is hard to answer. Go directly to the next question. In this paper, you should at least manage to get 17 marks which I think it is very possible to get.

Marks to get A in PT3 Mathematics Section B

This section is a subjective question. You will need to write short answers or tick on the correct answers. You can take a look at the sample PT3 questions. I found this section is actually the easiest to score despite the level being mixed from low to middle intensity.

Each question gives you 4 marks with a total of 20 marks. You can pick the easy questions first and move to the harder questions once you have finished the other questions. Try to solve all the questions in 20 minutes too.

I know you can. This part doesn't require you to write lengthy equations or answers. You only need to answer 5 questions!

In this section, you should target to get at least 17 marks. So totalling both section A and B, you now have 30 marks in total. How many more should you score to get A in PT3?

Are you now excited to actually sit for PT3 assessment?

Marks to get A in PT3 Mathematics Section C

The last section is the most crucial part to score. You will need to score at least 51 marks to get A!

Not hard at all.

There are only 6 questions and each question you should only spend a maximum of 10 minutes. DO NOT Exceed the time. The allocated time is more than enough for you to answer each question. There will be 5 smaller questions at most.

In this part, you should look at the marks given for each question. You should give an answer and show steps according to the mark.

  • 1 mark means only give the answer.
  • 2 marks need you to show at least a step or method and the answer
  • 3 marks and above have multiple steps or methods and sometimes few answers.

You will encounter a few HOTs questions and the intensity level per question is from middle to high.

Remember, all questions have answers! You only need to use the correct formula and methods to get the answer.

Remember to show all your steps and never skip anything as you might lose some marks.

You can download PT3 Trial Paper 2019 Section A, Section B and Section C. I have included the marking scheme too. You can see the steps on how to get marks in Section C.

Example Question 11 – Section C

Ali and Ahmad plan to visit Turkey with the budget of RM 2 690 per person. Ali pays RM 1 190 as a deposit while Ahmad pays RM 1 690 for the tourist agent fee. Each month Ali saves RM 300 and Ahmad saves RM 200.

(a) How long, in a month, must they save so that their savings are enough to pay for the trip?

[2 marks]

Here you can see the marks is 2. So you need to show some steps and give the correct answer to get a full mark. Here I will show you how.

Ali: (2690-1190)/300 = 5 months

Ahmad: (2690-1690)/200 = 5 months

Answer: 5 months

Mathematics involves everything that needs calculations, equations and algebra. PT3 are constructed by different intensity levels that include HOTs questions – the one that need higher thinking skills to solve problems. It is the combination of indirect concepts and mathematical functions which makes it, Mathematics.

Here are a few wrap up tips for scoring Pt3!

  1. Formulas are provided
  2. You are allowed to use non-programmable calculator
  3. Master and grasp all chapters you’ve learnt from form 1 till form 3.
  4. Most chapters are interconnected, so you need to understand every basic topics before furthering to the next level.
  5. I recommend at least 3 questions a day! But no harm in doing more.
  6. Don't easily give up when facing complex questions. Remember all questions have answers. So get back to the basics and concept and off you go into answering them.
  7. Always follow the timing you allocated for each question. Just move on to the next question as quickly as possible if you find that particular question is hard or you just get black out.

What have we learnt so far? Do you have any questions? You can always ask me in the comment sections and I will always be here to answer. If not, you can always check out the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s website for updates on the current format of the PT3 examination. You can also check out the Complete Guide to PT3 Mathematics to get a full view about the subject and examination.

I hope you get more confident in scoring A for your examination. PT3 assessment is not the end, as well as SPM examination. Both are the new beginning of your future.

Mathematics exists everywhere. If you find it hard to grasp the concept, do not hesitate to get help. Superprof can provide you with excellent tutors that can guide and teach you even to the basic concept of understanding math.
