“There should be no such things as a boring mathematics”

-Edsger Dijkstra

In the era of technology, you can get anything by a simple click. Not only that, these days you can even get things done by using your voice. You can ask Siri (Apple) or Bixby (android) to do your mathematical questions too. Have you tried that?

But don't ask them too complex questions. Their knowledge is still limited. Just like ours. Scientists keep on inputting data into the Artificial Intelligent (AI). Everything is stored in a huge database.

We are just like the AI. We depend on teachers (scientists) to teach us new knowledge. But our memory isn’t like AI. Our memory can only be permanently stored through repetition. This is why it is important to always keep learning.

As students, repetitive learning helps to strengthen memory, improve speed, and stimulate confidence in the long-term run. The best way to learn mathematics is through repetition. Do exercises frequently to stimulate your brain neutron to remember the concepts.

This will create snowball effects. The exposure to repetition will embed the concept and skills in our long term memory. You will know the difference once you've done repetitive learning at least 3 times. That is the reason why you can do a multiplication table in your mind.

In 2020, Form 3 Assessment (PT3), was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, PT3 has been cancelled once again. Does this mean you can be relieved from studying your PT3 topics?

Surely no. You will still have to finish schooling. To get a high school certificate, you will need to sit for Secondary School Examination Certificate (SPM). That is your short-term goal. Therefore, doing self-study on PT3 assessment  is still very  important.

Today, Superprof will guide you in preparing for your test. This includes all the solving techniques, paper format, tips and sample forecast questions.

What is PT3 Examination Latest Format?

One should familiarize themselves with the format questions for PT3 assessment. Without knowing the format, it is like you are taking a risk to achieve higher marks. Do you know that your PT3 paper is going to be assessed internally?

You should know that the best place to get help is from your teacher. They are the best expert that you should go to as they know what type of questions that might come out in the assessment. This is why you shouldn't miss your classes.

There are only little changes made from the previous PT3 version prior to 2018. However, the intensity of HOTs questions remains the same. Ministry of Education (MOE) has also set the current format and will update any changes in their website.

You only need to sit for 1 paper in Mathematics. There are a total of 31 Questions.

  • Section A consists of 20 objective questions with a total of 20 Marks.
  • Section B has 5 structured questions with guided response and also with 20 Marks.
  • Lastly, in Section C, there are 6 structured questions but with limited response. This section carry the highest weightage of 60 Marks.

Why the need to study Mathematics?

  1. Mathematics is everywhere.
  2. Mathematics is used in your daily life.
  3. Mathematics is crucial in your working life.
  4. Mathematics is needed in your marriage life.

Even when PT3 has been cancelled, do not forget these 4 importance of studying and learning mathematics.

“It is impossible to overstate the importance of problems in Mathematics. It is by means of problems that mathematics develops and actually lifts itself by its own bootstraps. Every new discovery in Mathematics, is a result from an attempt to solve some problem”

-Howard Eves

What is PT3 Examination Marking Scheme?

The importance of understanding marking schemes has always been overlooked at. You should by now know that all the questions have been allocated a certain mark. The mark is your setting point in how many steps or methods you need to show and how many answers you need to find.

In PT3 Mathematics assessment, you need to start targeting the total score you would want to achieve in each section.

Since Section A contains low level objective questions, you should aim to get at least 90% right. Overall marks is 20, so you should target to score 17-18 points in this section.

Meanwhile in Section B, the level of questions is from low to middle intensity. However, the questions are subjective. You should be able to answer all right as you don't even need to write lengthy answers or show any complicated steps or equations. Thus, you should also target to get at least 90%, by all means 17-18 marks from a total of 20 marks.

The last part has the hardest intensity level of questions. Most of the HOTs questions are given here. Even though there are only 6 questions, if we times with the smaller questions, it might be around 20-24 questions in total.

Even if there are HOTs questions, you need to know that HOTs questions aren’t necessarily hard. Some asked very basic mathematics. However, the question might be a bit tricky. Nonetheless, you should start with answering Section C before other sections as these sections have the highest marks.

BUT bear in mind, skip the questions if your mind doesn't instantly know how to answer the question. Do not waste your precious time.

How many marks should you target in this part to get A for your assessment?

At least 80%! Roughly you should get around 50-54 marks in Section C.

So at least achieving a total of 84 marks (Section C 50 + Section A 17 + Section A 17) is not impossible.

Here are a few things you should remember when answering a Mathematics paper.

  1. Understand all the basics math and grasp the concept.
  2. Answer the questions according to the marks given.
  3. Practice more on HOTS questions.
  4. Do not easily give up!
  5. A good time management is a MUST.
