  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed a deep interest in mathematics during my school years. I was always fascinated by the logical structure and problem-solving aspects of the subject. My passion grew stronger when I pursued my undergraduate studies at the University of Kelaniya, where I specialized in mathematics. During my Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Dallas, I had the opportunity to teach and mentor students, which sparked my enthusiasm for tutoring. Seeing students struggle at first but then experience that "aha!" moment when they finally grasp a concept is what made me realize how much I enjoy teaching.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics, focusing on different carriculum at both Ordinary and Advanced levels. I enjoy teaching algebra, calculus, and trigonometry because they are fundamental to higher-level math and have many real-world applications. I also like problem-solving techniques and showing students how math applies to different fields, such as physics, engineering, and even economics. If I had to choose a topic I like a little less, it might be statistics-not because it's unimportant, but because some students find it challenging to appreciate its real-world significance until they see practical applications.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had a fantastic high school math teacher who had a unique way of making complex concepts feel simple. He encouraged curiosity and problem-solving rather than rote memorization. Later, during my university years, I was inspired by my professors, especially those who combined research with teaching, showing me that mathematics is not just about solving problems in textbooks but about discovering new patterns and theories.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs patience, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Every student learns differently, so it's important to adjust teaching methods based on their needs. Encouragement is also key-students should feel confident to ask questions and make mistakes, as that's how real learning happens. Lastly, enthusiasm for the subject is essential; if a tutor is passionate, it naturally makes the subject more engaging for students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most memorable tutoring experiences was with a student who initially disliked math and struggled with basic concepts. Through consistent guidance and encouragement, he gradually gained confidence and started excelling. Eventually, he not only passed his exams with top grades but also developed a genuine interest in the subject. That moment reinforced my belief that the right approach can change a student's perspective on learning.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One challenge I often see is students struggling with foundational concepts. Many students come to me with a fear of math because they missed key concepts in earlier years. My challenge as a tutor is to identify these gaps and help students rebuild their understanding, often by breaking concepts down into simpler steps. Another challenge is keeping students engaged, especially in an online setting, so I make sure to incorporate interactive tools and real-world examples.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is definitely a passion of mine. I love the process of breaking down difficult concepts and making them accessible. Beyond that, I also enjoy mathematical research and problem-solving. In my free time, I like exploring new developments in math and science. Outside of academics, I enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, which helps me connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my dedication to helping students succeed, regardless of their starting point. I focus on making math engaging, tailoring lessons to individual needs, and ensuring that my students not only pass their exams but also develop confidence in their abilities. My years of experience, strong academic background, and passion for teaching all contribute to my effectiveness as a tutor.
