About Dr Karishmeh (Kay)

My main priority when teaching adults (as compared to teaching children, which I've also done) is to ensure the student doesn't feel technically inadequate. I emphasize technique right from the very first lesson, focusing on building dexterity, independence of fingers, and velocity, using bespoke technical exercises I've created myself for my students. I am also a passionate devotee of classical piano repertoire, and I pass on this love of the canon to my students, via original repertoire and my own arrangements, depending on the experience of the student. Via my online studio, I've also worked with advanced students on concerto repertoire (where the student has played the piano part, and I've played the orchestral part on another piano) - leading to some remarkable results. Finally, my passion for piano teaching - not just virtuoso performance - is obvious when you meet me for the first lesson. It's my privilege to help people of all ages and backgrounds find a joy in learning the piano, and - where advanced students are concerned - taking their piano playing to the highest level possible.

About the lesson

Using a sophisticated two HD camera set-up, my lessons take place entirely online, via Zoom. I cater to adult beginners, intermediate students and advanced pianists of all ages and backgrounds. You'll study classical piano performance spanning Bach and Beethoven, to popular music by The Beatles. I prioritize reading notation, and playing classical repertoire with or without an explicit focus on grade exams. You can expect to be super enthusiastic after each lesson, and inspired to practice to improve your playing. I have advanced degrees (Master's, and PhD) in music, which means I bring a great deal of knowledge to each lesson. Lessons are 40 minutes (adult beginners) and 60 minutes (intermediate and advanced students) - there's no minimum block of lessons, you can pay-as-you-go, to ensure 100% flexibility for the student. Kay is an exceptional piano teacher. She is a hugely accomplished pianist, a brilliant communicator, and has an amazing talent for adapting classes for the student she sees in front of her. Kay is incredibly professional, always has a plan of travel for my pianistic development, and leaves me feeling even more in love with piano than I did at the start of a class. As a busy professional, currently training as a General Practitioner, my weekly piano class is a welcome switch-off from the day job; Kay transforms the weekly class into a delightfully enriching musical experience.
