About Jordan
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in writing from Washburn University. While pursuing my degree, I was invited by the English Department head to help teach an experimental English Composition course designed to benefit students who had demonstrated difficulty with the subject previously. I thoroughly enjoyed working with my students, and pushed them to think in new ways and try new skills they had not yet used. After graduation, I taught for a year in an 8th grade Language Arts position - again, I adored working with my 75 students and loved both discussing and teaching novels, poetry, creative writing, and essay writing with them. I left the district of my own accord - the newly-purchased curriculum was extremely restrictive, and I found it out of alignment with my teaching style and values.
With my experiences, I have found that I am comfortable teaching between 8th grade and early college level students. Depending on skill level and need, I may also be comfortable with students as young as 5th grade and as high-level as 3rd or 4th year college students.

I meet my students at their skill level, and we work collaboratively to ensure success! That means I won't ask you to learn things that aren't important to your long-term success, and that I will find ways to incorporate your interests and priorities into lessons. Every student is an individual, and I believe that the best education happens when teachers understand and act on that reality. I also work hard to ensure that students with learning differences or neurodivergences recieve education in a way that works for them.
I do hold my students to high standards and expect them to work hard - learning is not passive, and I will not tolerate passivity or low work ethic from students. That doesn't mean that I won't work with you on deadlines or expect you to "get it" the first time we go over something - life happens, and learning is a process. Communication of setbacks or needs is a must, though!
