About Michael
Hi, I'm Michael Van Bodegom Smith! I'm a Los Angeles-based music educator, composer for film & TV, and music producer & songwriter. Music drastically improved my life growing up, and my primary goal as an educator is to share that gift with others. I am a full-time professional musician working in Los Angeles, splitting my time producing for Grammy-nominated artists, writing music for the silver screen for companies like Marvel, Disney, and Netflix, and most importantly, sharing my knowledge of music with students of all ages across Los Angeles. In the past, I have worked with educational institutions like Craft Music, Hussain College, Academic Center for Tutoring, and Columbia College Chicago. I am a proud member of the Television Academy, Recording Academy, Society for Composers and Lyricists, Composers Diversity Collective, Alliance for Women Film Composers, and WVZ MFG Publishing Co.

With over 10 years of teaching experience, my teaching method is centered on one thing: the student. Music can be very personal and, at times, frustrating, so my primary goal is for each lesson to end with a feeling of genuine, fulfilling progress, no matter how big or small.
A typical lesson plan begins with a 10-minute warm-up, where we check in on how practice (or the lack thereof—I understand life gets busy) has been going. We'll then move into our chosen method. The main part of the lesson revolves around the songs or pieces we're currently focused on. I personally like to have a diverse mix of music—perhaps something contemporary, a classical standard, or a jazz standard—but ultimately, the student will lead this selection. When we introduce a new piece, a specific music theory concept, or a music production technique, we'll focus on understanding the technical, cultural, and practical concepts behind it.
Having taken lessons with many wonderful educators throughout my career, I can confidently say that a diverse understanding across all genres of music is priceless. I am fortunate to work not only across all genres as an instrumentalist but also as a composer and producer. Whether you have a technical question or want insight into the music business itself, I am more than happy to delve deep into any subject.

Michael was an amazing teacher. I genuinely felt good in my class as he is concise but also funny. The class went smoothly with a lot from his help. He has a very wide knowledge in music and he was able to compare some of the stuff I knew from singing and use that as a tool. Will definitely keep coming back!

I am a retired music teacher and have known Michael for a long time. Michael is a talented musician. He is very responsible and personable. He was a top student in his Columbia School of the Arts in Chicago. As a student, Michael served as a professor's assistant and served as a mentor to other students.
