About Will

Unlock your mathematical potential with a First-Class graduate from the University of Cambridge.

I hold a BA in Mathematics from Cambridge and a Masters in Astrophysics, where I achieved a High First, ranking 5th in my year. My academic background is complemented by professional experience in financial markets, giving me a unique perspective on the real-world power and application of advanced mathematics.

With over 500 hours of tutoring experience, I have a proven track record of guiding students to achieve their highest potential. Whether you're aiming for an A* in A-Level, tackling the challenge of Olympiad problems, or preparing a competitive application for an elite university, I have the experience to help you succeed.

I focus in preparing students for the most demanding challenges in UK education:

- University Admissions: In-depth preparation for STEP, MAT, and TMUA papers.
- Oxbridge Interviews: Mock interviews and coaching to develop the mathematical thinking top universities look for.
- A-Level Maths & Further Maths: Mastering the curriculum and perfecting exam technique for A/A* grades.
- GCSE Maths: Building a rock-solid foundation for future success.
- Olympiad and Math Challenge preparation.

I'm passionate about helping students not just to pass exams, but to become confident, creative, and resilient problem-solvers.

My philosophy is simple: we learn mathematics by doing.

My teaching style is dynamic, interactive, and entirely focused on your strengths and weaknesses.

It was not long ago that I was taking STEP and MAT myself, so I understand the pressure and the challenges involved.

My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where you feel confident to tackle difficult problems and ask any question.

What to expect from our sessions:

- Problem-Focused Learning: We won't just recite formulas. We will work through challenging problems together, step-by-step, focusing on developing your intuition and problem-solving strategies. Learn too how to reflect on a problem to gain the most out of it.

- Tailored Sessions: Every lesson is designed around your specific goals, whether that's mastering a tricky A-Level topic, decoding a STEP question, or building confidence for an interview.

- Developing Deep Understanding: My aim is to help you see the "why" behind the maths. We'll explore the beauty and creativity of the subject, building skills—insight, determination, patience—that last.

- Professional Online Setup: I use a digital whiteboard and interactive tools to make our online sessions seamless, engaging, and highly effective.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in tutoring was sparked during my first year at University while helping students navigate both A-level further maths and the STEP examinations. I quickly realised that I not only had a strong grasp of the material, but also an ability for clear communication and a genuine care for the subject.

This passion for pure mathematics evolved throughout the years into an eventual specialisation in theoretical physics, particularly General Relativity and Cosmology. My academic journey culminated in an Astrophysics Master Degree at Cambridge, where I used advanced data analysis and statistical techniques to search for gravitational waves. This work allowed me to engage with the most exciting frontiers of theoretical physics, including black holes, string theory, quantum field theory and cosmology.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

What truly excites me about teaching is the opportunity to guide students beyond simply memorising. I love finding problems that require very little prerequisite knowledge but demand novel, creative thinking. My goal is to teach students how to approach a problem, develop intuition for it and then build up logical arguments from there.

There is a genuine, unparalleled joy in witnessing a student's "eureka" moment as difficult concepts click. Also, watching them grow in their confidence and mathematical independence is also immensely rewarding. I focus on developing this crucial skill, as it is the foundation for success in any advanced scientific field.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

A very significant role model for me is Stephen Hawking. Not only did I grow up reading his 'A Brief History of Time', but the connection is quite personal, as a fellow cosmologist at Gonville and Caius College. Beyond his intellect, I have been inspired by his relentless curiosity, his deep appreciation of culture, and, most profoundly, his ability to transcend immense personal difficulty. He is testament to the power of the human mind and willpower.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe a great tutor must have four key qualities:

    - Patience and Empathy: each student is different. Understanding these differences and the unique perspective that each student brings is crucial to the formation of a trusting learning environment.
    - Enthusiasm: A genuine passion for the subject is infectious. When a tutor is truly excited, this easily passes on to the student.
    - Originality: The ability to construct new analogies, and find novel problems, or to reframe a concept in a different light.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My own educational journey has shaped my teaching philosophy. During my primary school years, I was placed in lower-set maths classes and did not display any substantial promise. Everything changed in my first year of secondary school when a teacher saw something in me. He actively pushed me and offered additional guidance outside of class. His belief in me was transformational, and demonstrated to me firsthand how positive, motivating guidance can make a tremendous difference not only to educational outcomes but to a student's enjoyment and lifelong relationship with the subject. It is why I am always committed to my students, and many come back to me for help or advice which I am always very happy to give.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

My greatest challenge was Functional Analysis. It is the exceptionally beautiful area of pure mathematics that underlies a lot of the mathematical aspects of General Relativity, but it is particularly unforgiving. Having offered up sweat and tears in the effort to understand it, the intense struggle gave me an appreciation that the only path to true mastery of a subject is perseverance.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My deepest intellectual passion is cosmology. I am absolutely captivated by the understanding of the evolutionary history of the universe on the very largest scales. What makes it so thrilling is that it is the current arena where all theoretical physics converges - General Relativity, particle physics, and the search for gravitational waves. We are living in a Golden Age of discovery in this field, and sharing the excitement of these incredible breakthroughs is a true joy.
  • What makes you a Superprof ?

What makes me a Superprof is the deep love for the subject with empathy for the student's own journey - born from my own lived experience. I don't aim just to teach formulas; I strive to get students excited about mathematics, physics and empower them to think independently.

I vividly remember all the mental and emotional hurdles of preparing for major exams and academic challenges. Because of that, I see my role more like a coach than a teacher. I am to guide students, but also build their resilience and confidence to tackle these head on!
