About Michael
I'm a certified ESL Pronunciation Teacher, and Accent Specialist teaching the General American English. Some may call it Accent Reduction or Accent Modification. I value professionalism, empathy, patience, and clarity in my teaching approach, ensuring that students feel supported and understood throughout their learning journey. I'm committed to measurable and continuous growth, both for myself and my students, adapting the pace of the course to meet individual needs and fostering an environment of cultural sensitivity and respect. My biggest interests are Catholic theology and spirituality, my family (as a husband and father), linguistics, and the classical liberal arts (especially philosophy, history, and Latin). While my days are full I find time most days for my hobbies: like going for a jog and having coffee at sunrise, listening to podcasts. I don’t have the time like before, but I might squeeze in time to play video games or watch anime. My vision is to one day be the world's leading ESL Speech Coach for native Spanish speakers who communicate with native English speakers of North America, breaking down language barriers to help them step into the opportunities they are called to pursue. (You do not need to speak Spanish to take lessons with me if your English is B1 or higher) I was born and raised in the USA, but I currently live in Mexico.

My mission is to help non-native English speakers internalize and master the pronunciation of General American English in order to enhance their communication with native speakers of North America, in three ways: Intelligibility – applying the correct sounds at the right time within an acceptable range of accuracy so the listener can understand. Accent – developing guidelines for articulatory setting and placement, making it easier for the speaker to produce sounds and, ultimately, make it easier for the listener to comprehend. Fluency – using correct rhythm, stress, intonation, and connected speech so that essential as well as implied meanings are communicated effectively. In doing so, I seek to improve my clients' quality of life while providing a dignified life for my family, all for the glory of God. Learning intelligibility, accent, and fluency together helps the student make more connections and retain what they've learned (Dahmen, 2022). ––– TEACHING METHODOLOGY: This isn't just another mimic session where you try to use the sounds from your native language to speak English. I guide you (through the Articulatory Method) to discover each English sound as something NEW—not from your native language. Our first lesson will help me get to know your needs and goals, but also catch your top 3-5 sounds in need of improvement. Research shows that this helps learners master new sounds in a second language, because when you learn and practice new movements, your brain creates new "categories" for these previously unfamiliar sounds, making it easier to speak and suddenly hear them correctly. (Flege, 2019; Cibelli, 2020) First, to set your accent development in the right direction we will begin by changing your mouth's articulatory setting—the resting or base position for English. This sets the foundation so pronunciation and accent can develop side-by-side without any plateaus. Now this is when we'll start focusing the top 3-5 sounds that need the most improvement. The order of priority for sounds after that will be based on your personalized results from your Pronunciation AI results. We will get you as close as possible to 100% on every sound! You will have daily homework assignments, with automatic AI and weekly personal feedback to build muscle memory for the correct sound. All while learning accent and pronunciation, we'll learn fluency topics using the book "Clear Speech" by Judy Gilbert. We'll learn how to convey more meaning, emotion, and structure by adjusting rhythm, stress, and intonation. We'll also learn how to connect the sounds to speak more naturally. Each lesson ends with a short conversation, an opportunity for quick, immediate feedback on major pronunciation errors. ––– WHAT CAN A BETTER PRONUNCIATION AND ACCENT DO FOR YOU?
