About Sandra
As an educator, my aim is to build skills that students will need for their writing and/or English proficiency in their future academic endeavors.
I have experience teaching English literacy and phonics with students aged from elementary to adult. (Currently I tutor ELA with elementary school students which I enjoy immensely!)
My studies in linguistics and social justice have allowed me to examine the structure and the nature of several languages, and have prepared me to work with different types of learners of all backgrounds. I am an individual that sees language as a tool, and one of my goals in my teaching is to decolonize language, especially in the context of students of different backgrounds.
Relevant UC Santa Cruz courses include: Variation of Language Processing, Psycholinguistics I, Phonology I & II, and Syntax I & II.
I am so looking forward to working with students on any English language proficiency or writing skills!

-Lessons are structured around skill-building and are led by particular students' needs. The goal is to uncover skills that the student can confidently use in daily conversations and writing tasks.
-This may involve assistance writing an essay outline, or exercises for spelling and grammar (dependent on students' grade level etc.)
-Reading comprehension work may involve text(s) chosen by the student or by the tutor that will be appropriate according to literacy level
-A typical lesson will be built around a grammatical concept. We will have a reading selection where we will work on comprehension, fluency, and new vocabulary. We will always end with conversation practice! :)
