About Samuel
- What kind of experience do you have?
While studying at university I tutored around Fulham and since leaving have continued to tutor professionally gaining a large amount of experience in tutoring students between the ages of fourteen and eighteen. In addition to tuition with students found through The Tutor Pages, I tutor for Winterwood Tutors, The London Academy of Tutors, run Maths and Physics tuition courses for Hillcrest Revision and work for Lucullus International Educational Consultants. Students under my tuition have seen improvements to grades and have been happy with the overall result they have achieved in their final exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied Physics at Imperial College London from 2008 to 2012 and studied for A-levels and GCSEs in Maths and Science based subjects before this. Throughout my time at Imperial I have studied under many tutors including Dr Benjamin Sauer, Dr Arnaud Czaja, Dr Xuhua Wang, Professor Stephen Warren and Professor Richard Thompson and was under the direction of Senior Tutor Professor Raymond Murray.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently I am tutoring on a daily basis and have students studying maths and physics GCSEs and A-levels. From the 2019 GCSE and A-level exam results my students achieved above their expected grades with some gaining a full two grades during the couple of months leading up to the exams. I have a variety of students continuing on from last year who have achieved good exam marks in their end of year internal school exams.

As I have been a professional tutor since graduating from Imperial College London in 2012 with a BSc Physics I am well placed to give expert tuition in physics and maths.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
At GCSE level I teach Science, specialising in Physics, and Maths. At A-Level I teach Physics, Maths and Further Maths.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied the BSc Physics and Music Performance course at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music graduating with second class (upper division) honours in 2012. This is a unique degree containing elements of the courses from both universities and is designed to leave both music and physics open as a career path afterwards. Previously I gained four As at A-level in Physics, Music, Maths and Further Maths and five A*s, five As and two Bs at GCSE.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £50 for one hour, £70 for an hour and a half and £85 for two hours. Longer sessions are possible and will be charged at the rate of £45 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
I do not offer tuition from my own home as there is no suitable space but because of this I regularly travel around London to students houses. I have built up a base of tuition around Camden, Finchley, Barnet, Central London and Kensington so would like to continue teaching around there but due to the excellent transport links in London I will endeavour to incorporate students into a working timetable wherever possible and am happy teaching anywhere in Central London.
- When are you available?
During the week I am available to tutor Monday through to Thursday but tend to be very busy with current students so finding a convenient time is sometimes difficult. As tutoring usually has to fit around the school day I generally tutor from 4pm onwards and am happy to tutor until 8pm or 9pm depending on the student. I would also be able to tutor during the day but this tends to be very uncommon outside of school holidays, though this arrangement can be perfect for a boarding school student. At weekends I generally tutor on Sundays during the day and towards the latter half of the year tutor on Saturdays as well in order to provide the necessary contact time with students in the run up to their exams. As my work requires plenty of travel I would appreciate it if we could be flexible with time to try to minimise my travel time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I find tuition works best on children aged 13 and over and hence prepare students for GCSE, A-Level and International Baccalaureate qualifications.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
The maths and physics courses tend to be very similar in approach across the various exam boards. I have prepared students for AQA, WJEC, OCR and Edexcel exams in GCSEs, iGCSEs and A-levels and have experience tutoring the physics and maths components of the International Baccalaureate. This means most syllabi are familiar to me but, when faced with a new syllabus, a short bit of preparation allows me to tutor it effectively. This is always to check the content of the course as I understand all the material myself but need to familiarise myself with what exactly is required for the student.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I have a lot of experience teaching on Skype so lessons can take place remotely which has been particularly useful for students wishing to keep up their studies through coronavirus. It is also beneficial to students wishing to continue studies on holidays or who board in a foreign country, especially ones where expertise in UK examinations is less common. Lessons given on Skype come with the added benefit of internet videos and images which can help with demonstrations and I provide the images used as notes during the lesson in a .zip file at the end of a session. I currently run sessions using a webcam and stylus to allow students to see exactly what I am writing.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Before taking tuition students need to realise that tuition does not simplify the subject they are studying. A tutor can, however, make the studying of the subject faster and easier by directly understanding what a student understands and what they do not and trying to help them by explaining concepts. Students must be open and honest about what they know in the subject and not try to hide the parts they find difficult - these are actually the most important parts of the subject for them - with the best students approaching a tutor with their own questions about the parts of a subject they are confused by. By combining their own hard work with focused work with a tutor students can very quickly improve their understanding of a subject.

Sam is extremely easy to get on with, always polite and extremely patient.
He maintains a constant positive approach and has been an excellent tutor for our daughter; Sam has a great knowledge of the subject and specifications for the different Exam Boards. With Sam's help my daughter achieved A* in IGCSE Physics in August 2016;
Thanks Sam!I saw Sam for a few weeks before my A2-Levels and he helped me achieve an A in physics and an A* in mathematics. A great tutor, he was excellent at finding and correcting weak points in both subjects. His ability to explain difficult concepts simply was invaluable.
Sam could not be a nicer person to have in your home for tutoring. He has a kind, gentle manner, enabling his students to feel comfortable with him. He works hard to meet each student's individual needs and is patient at explaining difficult concepts. He also makes sure the full syllabus is covered. He is flexible and reliable. I would defintiely recommend him.
Sam is an excellent tutor who helped me achieve my goal of an A in A level Maths. He was friendly and firm at the same time and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone.
Excellent, friendly tutor, perfect in every way. Thoroughly recommended. Encouraged my C/D grade daughter on to a final B grade GCSE. Many thanks.
Sam is a very friendly tutor who made me feel comfortable asking questions and was patient in his explanations, using many different examples so I would understand. I would highly recommend him.
