About Ruth

- What kind of experience do you have? I provide online lessons to students all over the world. I have tutored students from postgraduate level through to primary school age (usually Year 5 and 6), and have a proven track record of improving exam and level results, as well as grades, as my testimonials fully demonstrate. I frequently support students applying to grammar or selective schools, who are sitting 10+, 11+, 12+ and 13+ style exams, and other key stage two and key stage three students who also need help to improve their grammar, comprehension and creative writing skills, as well as advice on how to successfully plan, structure and edit their writing. I support GCSE/IGCSE students with all aspects of their English Language and Literature courses, including exam techniques. To do this I use a selection of past exam papers to provide help with individual questions, and give advice on time allocation, as well as thorough feedback on all approaches and progress. I aim to improve confidence and therefore in-turn help provide the skills needed for both tackling tests, exams and classroom discussion. My A-level and IB students typically need help with their textual and literary analysis and essay writing skills and I have also worked with home-learners who have all achieved grades A*, A or B in their IGCSEs with my sole support. I regularly assist undergraduate and postgraduates preparing and writing essays, reports, presentations and dissertations and I also work with and mentor adult learners who may be returning to studying after a long break, or are preparing for a professional course or qualification. I also support individuals who are working on new business or extra-curricular projects, providing editing, proofreading and copywriting services. I always work at an appropriate pace and encourage a high level of interactivity and discussion. I have taught students with dyslexia, dyspraxia and who speak English as a second language. I offer a committed, professional and flexible service. I can provide testimonials from a variety of students and parents, and references upon request. - Tell me about some of your current students. My current students are varied and include Year 5 and Year 6 students in the UK and abroad, who require entrance exam support; especially focusing on understanding the expectations of comprehension questions, the comprehension texts themselves and preparing stories, descriptions and essays in timed conditions. I am also supporting GCSE and IGCSE students, in Year 10 and Year 11, who need help with producing responses in line with examiners' expectations for both Language and Literature tasks that feature poetry, set texts or pieces of writing that are unseen. They may also be preparing and writing longer pieces of coursework and I provide advice on essay structuring as well as technique. I also support students in British or International Schools abroad, primarily in Asia, who need extra help with developing their creative writing or planning, structuring and writing their analytical essays or their applications for new schools and university or college courses.

I'm incredibly passionate about all aspects of English, English Literature and Creative Writing and consider my teaching to be confidence-building and my approach is friendly, patient and inspiring. I am encouraging, reassuring and always enthusiastic throughout my sessions. I try my very best to instil a sense of enjoyment for the subject in my students, who often tell me they have a renewed enthusiasm for books, poetry and story and essay writing as a consequence of our lessons. After a short consultation with either student or parent, I promptly tailor my online lessons to tackle an individual's needs. My own academic experience, alongside my professional writing and editing skills, enables me to help students focus on their weaker areas quickly, instigating structured and achievable plans for progress from the initial session. I help students to realise their potential in English studies with organisational help and mentoring, as well as a clear focus on academic expectations. I set challenging yet attainable goals in order to support students to improve in their weaker areas and see my students achieve beyond their expectations and surprise themselves with the ease by which they do so. This is as successful in helping them realise their ability to be critical and analytical about texts that they read, as it is of their ability to improve in their use of descriptive techniques and actual storytelling skills. I have extensive experience of using email and a variety of video calling apps, such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet, for online lessons with school-age students (from Year 5 onwards) up to adult learners, and this method has proved as successful, and rewarding, as my many hours of face-to-face tuition. I also use Google Docs to share documents with my students of a suitable age so that all amendments can be clearly seen by both parties and provide resources, recommended reading and research links for my sessions.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been passionate about reading and writing since I was young. I remember being bought a typewriter at Christmas when I was nine or ten and dreaming about my future life as a writer. I had fantastic English teaching at secondary school and as an adult I spent more than a decade writing professionally about my other passion, music, contributing to many music publications both in print and online. I went on to study English Literature and Creative Writing as a mature student, where I discovered my love of historical fiction (both reading and writing!) and developed a strong interest in postcolonial literature. It was at university that I first had the idea of tutoring as a career choice. Whilst observing those who were guiding me through my BA and then my MA, I began to nurture the idea of supporting, inspiring and encouraging other fledgling writers and storytellers.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I cover most aspects of the UK national curriculum across key stage two, three and four and support a broad range of students; mainly those preparing for exams or tests of some kind (they could be 10+ / 11+ tests to International Baccalaureate assessments), those who need a boost in their confidence around writing and reading and those who need a kickstart to their passion for fiction, poetry, plays or journalism. Having the privilege to spend time with students and see them improve in the creative writing process or grasp tricker elements of analysis more than makes up for the occasional frustration of having to apply exam criteria that is necessary for them to academically succeed.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a wonderful English teacher throughout secondary school whose zeal (even for Chaucer!) greatly influenced me and she saw something in my passion for the subject as she selected me for school writing courses and entered my work into several competitions. I also had an excellent mentor during my time as a journalist who encouraged me to be brave and sure about my writing and my abilities as an editor. She taught me that focus, even during difficult circumstances, and attention to detail are essential and I have been able to apply these to my role as a tutor; I am both diligent and encouraging.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

As a tutor you have to be approachable, adaptable, empathetic, open-minded, a good listener, patient and a confident communicator. No two students are the same so a good tutor needs to be able to improvise too. A method that was successful for one student is not necessarily going to be a winner for another! Sometimes you have to think on your feet. As a tutor and a writer I still feel that I have lots to learn, improving your writing is a process that goes on for your entire life, and I look forward to the challenges that will come my way.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Over the last fifteen years there have been so many magnificent moments where my students have achieved more than they ever expected either in their exams, in improving their grades or just as importantly in their ability to create a piece or writing or analysis that they were extremely happy with. Seeing their faces filled with pride and a sense of achievement is what my job is all about.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Finding new ways to motivate students who have lost interest in their English or English Literature studies is something that I am always working on. There is not a one fits all rule for this and it can sometimes be challenging to find the best approach. I strive to provide students with a useful, tailored framework for their analysis and evaluations where they can draw on their independent thoughts and opinions as well as what they have learnt about a text and its author.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Books; fiction and biographies, music; live and recorded, movies, theatre, good journalism; documentaries and the written word are some of my passions. I do also genuinely love being a tutor and I wouldn't want to do anything else. Turning around students who are struggling, frustrated and unhappy so that they can become confident class contributors, capable exam candidates and competent writers is a true honour! As is working with adults who launch a great website, get accepted on a course or given a new job offer as a consequence, in part, of my help.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Real enthusiasm and a deep affection for my subject (even the harder bits!) and fifteen years of committed, professional and supportive teaching.
