About Estelle
Estelle is a Learning Specialist at youcubed, she facilitates in-person and virtual teacher workshops, develops curriculum tasks, and other website content with a focus on open creative math, mindset, and brain research. She participated in writing the youcubed Data Science High School course, a project based data science course that incorporates learning multiple technology tools to model data and a range of audiences to communicate findings to. In addition, she is a lecturer in the Stanford Teacher Education Program, STEP, and has taught courses focusing on race, intersectionality, identity, classroom community, assessment and equitable groupwork. Before joining youcubed, she was a high school math teacher for 10 years and co-authored a book about her experience, Mathematics for Equity: A Framework for Successful Practice (Nasir, et al). Estelle has worked throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with teachers and students, first at a charter school as a math coach and curriculum writer, and then as a Complex Instruction coach in San Francisco Unified schools. Lastly, she joined the Oakland Unified school district math team working as the middle school math coordinator to support the district in their transition to the Common Core State Standards where she collaborated with teachers and developed a district core curriculum.

My approach adapts to each student’s learning style, focusing on making complex ideas clear and accessible. I use informal questioning and present problems with multiple entry points to gauge how students think and adapt my teaching in real-time.
Reasoning Focus: I emphasize justification and reasoning, helping students understand and apply math concepts effectively.
A typical lesson with me includes:
Initial Problem: We start with a problem to see how the student approaches it, discussing their thought process.
Discussion: I engage with the student about their reasoning, addressing any misconceptions or gaps.
Information and Resources: I provide new methods or review previous material as needed, equipping the student with the necessary tools.
Practice: The student works on additional problems, applying what they’ve learned.
Work Review: We discuss their solutions and strategies, refining their understanding.
Reflection: We reflect on what was learned and plan the next steps for continued improvement.
My extensive experience allows me to tailor lessons to individual needs, whether for struggling students or those seeking to excel. I focus on helping students develop a deep comprehension of math concepts, rather than just memorizing procedures.
I work with middle and high school students across various math subjects, including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry. My methods also support those preparing for standardized tests or aiming to improve their overall relationship with math.
