About Alyssa
I am currently attending Solano Community College as a Biology major with hopes to transfer to UC Davis in the fall of 2019. I have been a tutor since I was 13, and now I currently teach violin and music theory part-time. I have a tremendous amount of experience navigating English courses, assignments, and tests, especially at the high school level. I took both AP English Literature and Composition and AP English Language and Composition, and got a 3 and 4 respectively. In college, I was able to bypass my first semester of English, and took a English composition course and a Mythology course that had an emphasis on comprehension and interpretation, and I am proud to say I achieved an A in both classes.
As someone who is majoring in a STEM field, but works in a creative field, I have deep-set knowledge in critical thinking, debate, and story-telling. I can write out an eight page essay on the affects of James Joyce on modern literature and turn around and shoot out a short story without a pause.

I work at my students' pace. I ask them what they know, and to show me what they can do. Through observation and questioning, I can determine problem areas and tackle them effectively. I myself am a visually learner, so I like to write everything out clearly and concisely and use teaching aids such as illustrations and videos to show processes in real time. I find when students know the how and why, they can understand how everything fits together and use comprehension clues to work out things they don't know (when I was younger, I liked finding common Latin roots and trying to determine their meaning!). I've worked with kids from the grade school to high school, as well as adult learners, and my teaching style changes with all age groups to better accommodate them. Above all else, student happiness is my top priority, so I never get angry or frustrated, or put anyone down. Life is a learning process, and no one should be punished for trying!
