About Guilherme
Hey! how are you doing?
My name is Guilherme, I've been an English and Italian teacher for over 18 years and I'm going to tell you a little about my story.
Since I was little, I've been passionate about other languages and learn them very easily. My father and brother were always fluent in English, which also motivated me to study. So by the time I finished high school, I was already fluent in the language, as my school also offered an excellent language course.
Right after graduating from university (PUC-RS), I lived in Sydney, Australia, and took a year-long hospitality technical course (Megt Institute), while also working in the hotel industry. It's important to note, however, that my accent is American, not Australian. And to complement my education, I took the highest level of the Cambridge proficiency exam (C2 Proficiency or CPE).
Later, I returned to Brazil and began studying Italian with a private tutor. I then lived for over a year in La Spezia, Italy, where I attended an Italian public school, received private lessons, and completed the citizenship process, as my great-grandfather was born in Calabria. I also took the CILS proficiency exams at the University of Siena up to the final level (Quattro - C2). Meanwhile, I continued working in hotels throughout my time in the country.
Since returning to Brazil in 2007, I've been teaching English and Italian. Initially, I worked for three years in language schools (Minds Idiomas, Sociedade Italiana de Porto Alegre, among others), and since 2010, I've been teaching private lessons (individual, in pairs, or small groups). In addition to teaching, I've also translated several academic articles for publication in scientific journals.
And in these 18 years, I have had students from the most diverse areas (doctors, dentists, engineers and architects, IT professionals, high school or undergraduate students, master's and doctoral students, advertisers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, etc.), and that is why I can converse in English or Italian on practically any subject, always making the student feel at ease.
I want to understand why you decided to start studying, and that's how I'll create a plan for our classes. I've always been very curious and enjoy listening to what people have to say, so besides teaching, I also learn a lot in class. I find it extremely rewarding to be able to help people achieve their goals or dreams by learning another language.
I've had students as young as 10 and as old as 90. I've taught people who were struggling a lot, or who needed to start from scratch, and others at an advanced level who simply wanted to improve.

First of all, I always set up a time (free of charge) just for an initial conversation, and my first question is: why do you want to take classes?
I want to understand your goals, know your story, and then I can suggest a path for us to follow.
In private lessons, everything is personalized, respecting each student's characteristics (level of knowledge, learning style and speed, topics of interest). I believe there is a partnership between student and teacher, with each doing their part to help the student achieve their goals.
There are different teaching methods, which will vary depending on the individual's needs. But if you want to learn to speak the language, the methodology I use most often is the Communicative Approach.
You'll speak English or Italian from the very first lesson, regardless of your level. But of course, I adapt to each student's level, so everything happens gradually, respecting each student's difficulties and pace. You can be sure you'll feel comfortable and understand everything that's happening in class.
It's important for students to talk a lot in class, as the most difficult skills are speaking and listening, so I usually focus more on these two aspects. But with the materials I use, we also practice reading and writing to cover all the skills. And in addition to traditional materials like books, I always try to make classes more dynamic with videos, conversation lessons, audiobooks, podcasts, series, films, etc.
I find it interesting to also share a bit of the culture of the country where the language is spoken, for a more complete experience. I believe I can do this in an authentic way, having lived abroad for over two years (Australia and Italy) and still consuming a lot of content in the languages I teach.
And just to give you an idea, the main characteristics of the Communicative Approach methodology are:
- use of language in real everyday situations
- authentic interaction between student and teacher
- develops the ability to express oneself clearly and precisely
- the student's personal experience as a learning element
- activities that connect what is seen in the classroom with activities outside of it.
