  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Accounting & Finance during my high school years when I first encountered business studies and economics as part of my curriculum. I found it fascinating to understand how businesses operate financially, how decisions are made, and the crucial role financial data plays in driving success. This curiosity led me to pursue further studies in accounting and finance, where I explored topics such as financial analysis, corporate finance, and investment management.

My passion for research emerged during my undergraduate studies when I had the opportunity to work on projects that involved analysing real-world financial data. I enjoyed uncovering patterns, deriving insights, and presenting data-driven recommendations. The process of critically examining information and contributing to knowledge inspired me to delve deeper into academic and practical research. My current interest in researching the "Impact of Environmental, Social & Governance Performance on Stock Price Volatility in Selected Asian Countries" reflects my commitment to combining analytical skills with real-world impact.

As for Economics, my interest was sparked by its ability to explain complex global phenomena. I was particularly drawn to understanding market dynamics, policy implications, and their impact on society. This interest deepened as I studied macroeconomics and microeconomics in more detail and explored how economic theories could be applied to solve contemporary issues like sustainability, globalisation, and market volatility.

My journey into the IT field began as a natural extension of my academic and professional pursuits. I recognised the growing significance of technology in analysing large datasets, automating processes, and enhancing decision-making. Learning tools such as Excel, Python, and data visualisation software enabled me to bridge the gap between technology and finance, further fueling my interest in IT. The ability to combine analytical, financial, and technical skills to solve problems excites me greatly.

Lastly, my passion for private tutoring began during my college years when I started helping peers with complex subjects. Seeing them grasp challenging concepts and succeed in their exams gave me immense satisfaction. Over time, I realised that teaching not only deepened my understanding of the subjects but also honed my communication and interpersonal skills. My tutoring journey has been about more than just sharing knowledge—it's about inspiring confidence, fostering curiosity, and making learning an enjoyable process.

In summary, my interests in these diverse fields have evolved through personal experiences, academic pursuits, and professional growth. Each has contributed to shaping my holistic approach to problem-solving and my commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach subjects related to Accounting, Finance, Economics, and IT, with a focus on helping students grasp fundamental concepts while connecting them to real-world applications. My teaching covers a range of topics across these fields, and I strive to make the learning experience engaging, interactive, and relevant to students' academic and career goals.

    Subjects and Topics I Teach

    1. Accounting & Finance:
I teach both foundational and advanced topics, including:
    - Financial Accounting: Principles, preparation of financial statements, and
    interpretation of accounting standards.
    - Managerial Accounting: Budgeting, cost analysis, and decision-making tools.
    - Corporate Finance: Capital budgeting, risk management, and valuation
    techniques.
    - Investment Analysis: Portfolio management, stock market analysis, and
    financial derivatives.
I enjoy teaching how financial concepts apply to real-world decision-making and markets. For example, helping students analyse annual reports or understand the implications of financial ratios excite me as it bridges theory with practice.

    2. Economics:
    My teaching in economics spans:
    - Microeconomics: Supply and demand, market structures, and consumer behaviour.
    - Macroeconomics: Economic growth, inflation, unemployment, and
    monetary/fiscal policies.
    - Development Economics: Role of sustainability, governance, and international trade in shaping economies.
I particularly enjoy discussing macroeconomic policies and global economic trends, as these topics allow for dynamic discussions on how economics shapes our world.

    3. IT & Data Analysis:
With the growing importance of technology, I teach:
    - Data Analysis Tools: Excel, Python, and data visualization software like
    Tableau and Power BI.
    - IT Concepts for Finance: Fintech applications, automation of financial
    processes, and database management.
    - Quantitative Methods: Statistical modelling, predictive analytics, and
    simulation techniques.
These topics excite me because they combine problem-solving, analytical thinking, and technology to drive innovation.

Topics I Like to Discuss with Students

    I thoroughly enjoy discussing:
    - Practical Applications of Theory: I like to dive into case studies, real-world
scenarios, and financial or economic trends to make theoretical concepts more relatable and interesting.
    - Emerging Trends: Topics like ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), fintech innovations, and global market dynamics are especially engaging as they are
    forward-looking and stimulate critical thinking.
    - Problem-Solving: I enjoy tackling complex problems with students, whether it's breaking down a financial model or analysing economic data. The process of arriving at a solution together is rewarding.

    Teaching Philosophy

Ultimately, my goal is to inspire curiosity and confidence in my students. Whether it’s a topic I love or one I find less exciting, I always strive to make it accessible, relevant, and meaningful for them. I encourage open discussions, critical thinking, and active participation to ensure a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I’ve had the privilege of being inspired by several role models, particularly teachers who left a lasting impact on my learning journey and shaped my approach to teaching.

One teacher who stands out was my high school economics instructor. She had an incredible ability to make even the most complex concepts—like inflation, market dynamics, and policy implications—feel relatable and exciting. What inspired me most was her passion for teaching and the way she connected textbook theories to real-world events, sparking my interest in economics. Her approach went beyond memorisation; she encouraged us to ask questions, think critically, and engage in meaningful discussions about the world around us.

Another significant role model was a university professor in finance who taught with a unique blend of academic rigour and real-world insights. He would use current financial news and case studies to bring lectures to life, showing how theoretical concepts like risk management or portfolio optimisation are applied in practice. His ability to simplify complexity, combined with his enthusiasm for the subject, motivated me to explore finance deeply and eventually pursue teaching and research in the field.

Lastly, my passion for teaching itself was influenced by a mentor during my early tutoring days. This individual emphasised the importance of patience, empathy, and adaptability when working with students. Watching them tailor their teaching style to each student’s needs taught me the value of understanding different learning approaches and fostering a supportive environment.

These role models not only inspired me academically but also shaped my belief that teaching is about igniting curiosity and empowering students to reach their potential. They instilled in me a passion for lifelong learning and a desire to pass that enthusiasm on to others.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being a good tutor requires a combination of technical expertise, interpersonal skills, and a genuine passion for teaching. Here are the key qualities that make an effective tutor:

    - Strong Subject Knowledge
    - Communication Skills
    - Patience
    - Adaptability and Flexibility
    - Empathy and Understanding
    - Enthusiasm for Teaching
    - Strong Organisational Skills
    - Problem-Solving Abilities
    - Encouraging Critical Thinking
    - Commitment to Continuous Learning
    - Reliability and Professionalism
    - Positive Attitude and Resilience

By embodying these qualities, a tutor not only helps students achieve their academic goals but also instils confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning that can last a lifetime.
  • Share a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During high school, I struggled with understanding compound interest in my math and economics classes. While the formula seemed straightforward on paper, I couldn’t grasp how it worked in real life, which made the entire topic feel abstract and intimidating.

One day, our teacher asked a simple but thought-provoking question: "If you save a small amount of money every month, how much do you think it will grow by the time you’re 50?"

She handed us a hypothetical scenario: saving $50 per month with a 5% annual interest rate compounded monthly. We worked on the calculations step by step. As we solved the problem, she explained how this principle forms the foundation for savings accounts, investments, and even loan calculations. She then connected it to stories of people who used consistent investing to build wealth over time.

It was a turning point for me. For the first time, I realised that math wasn’t just numbers—it was a practical tool that could shape real financial outcomes. It sparked my fascination with finance and economics, showing me how abstract concepts like interest rates could impact lives.

This experience taught me two important lessons that I carry into my teaching today:

    1. Relating theory to real-life scenarios transforms learning.
When students see the relevance of a concept, they’re far more engaged and motivated to understand it.
    2. Struggles can lead to growth.
My initial difficulty with the topic made the eventual breakthrough even more rewarding and deepened my appreciation for learning.

Now, as a tutor, I strive to replicate that experience for my students. Whether it’s explaining financial concepts, economic theories, or technical IT tools, I always aim to show their real-world applications and inspire curiosity—just like my teacher did for me.

This story reminds me that even the most challenging topics can become fascinating with the right perspective, and it’s a philosophy I bring into every lesson I teach.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Facing challenges in a subject is a natural part of learning and growth. Here are some difficulties I’ve encountered or continue to face, along with how I’ve addressed them:

    1. Bridging Theory and Practice

    - Challenge: In subjects like Accounting, Finance, and Economics, understanding theoretical concepts is often easier than applying them to real-world scenarios. For example, applying financial models or economic theories to real-life situations requires a deeper understanding and critical thinking.
    - How I Addressed It: I started focusing on case studies, real-world data analysis, and simulations to bridge the gap. Engaging in internships, research projects, and practical training also helped me connect the dots between theory and practice.

    2. Keeping Up with Evolving Fields

    - Challenge: Subjects like Finance and IT are constantly evolving due to technological advancements, new regulations, and emerging trends (e.g., fintech, ESG, blockchain). Staying updated can be overwhelming at times.
    - How I Address It: I dedicate time to continuous learning through professional courses, industry webinars, and academic research. Networking with professionals and joining forums also helps me stay current.

    3. Complexity of Certain Topics

    - Challenge: Some topics, like advanced econometrics, complex financial derivatives, or programming for data analysis, can be highly technical and intimidating. They often require a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects, which takes time to build.
    - How I Address It: I break down these topics into smaller, manageable sections and focus on mastering the basics before tackling advanced concepts. Seeking help from mentors, peers, and online resources has also been invaluable.

    4. Time Management in Research

    - Challenge: Conducting research, especially interdisciplinary studies like my current project on ESG performance and stock price volatility, can be time-consuming. Balancing research with other responsibilities can be difficult.
    - How I Address It: I use project management tools to set clear goals and deadlines, prioritise tasks, and dedicate specific blocks of time to research. Staying organised has been key to managing my workload.

    5. Staying Motivated During Challenges

    - Challenge: At times, encountering complex problems or slow progress can feel frustrating, especially in fields like IT and finance that demand precision and attention to detail.
    - How I Address It: I remind myself of my long-term goals, celebrate small
achievements, and seek support from peers or mentors when I feel stuck. Taking breaks and maintaining a positive outlook also help me stay motivated.

These challenges have shaped my resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, ultimately making me a better learner, researcher, and teacher. Overcoming difficulties has also deepened my appreciation for the subjects I study and teach.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Yes, I have several passions, and they complement and enhance each other. While teaching is a significant passion of mine, there are also specific elements within the subjects I teach and other interests that drive my enthusiasm.

    1. Passion for Teaching and Mentorship

Teaching is more than just a profession for me; it’s a way to inspire, empower, and connect with others. I find immense fulfilment in helping students overcome challenges, build confidence, and discover their potential. What excites me most about teaching is creating “aha!” moments when a student truly grasps a concept that initially seemed difficult.

Beyond subject knowledge, I’m passionate about mentoring students to think critically, approach problems creatively, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom. Watching them grow academically and personally is incredibly rewarding.

    2. Passion for Research and Critical Inquiry

Another passion lies in research, particularly in exploring how theoretical concepts apply to the real world. I enjoy delving into topics like the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors on financial markets, stock price volatility, and institutional quality. The process of investigating a question, analysing data, and uncovering insights excites me because it combines intellectual curiosity with the potential to influence real-world outcomes.

    3. Passion for Real-World Applications of Knowledge

I’m particularly passionate about making subjects like Accounting, Finance, and Economics relatable and relevant. For example, I enjoy connecting financial principles to real-life scenarios, such as budgeting, investing, or understanding economic policies. This passion drives me to design lessons and discussions that not only teach theoretical concepts but also equip students with practical skills.

    4. Passion for Technology and Its Integration with Learning
I’m also deeply interested in technology and its ability to transform education and finance. Whether it’s using data analysis tools, programming for financial modelling, or leveraging digital platforms to enhance teaching, I’m passionate about integrating technology to improve learning experiences and decision-making.

A Holistic View of My Passion

Ultimately, my passion isn’t confined to a single area—it’s the intersection of teaching, research, and applying knowledge in meaningful ways that drives me. Teaching is a way for me to share my love for learning, research allows me to explore and contribute to my fields of interest, and technology and creativity give me the tools to innovate and inspire.

This blend of passions ensures that my work remains exciting, impactful, and aligned with my long-term goals.
