Most Malaysians might know that the history of Malaysia began with the Sultanate of Melaka... but did you know that it also sparked the birth of both our country's major religion and economy? With the sultan and his people practising Islam, it became the main religion and grew widespread due to Melaka's strategic location. As the perfect meeting point between Eastern and Western Asia, Melaka also emerged as a major trading hub, especially for the spice trade in Southeast Asia.

Famous philosopher George Santayana once said that those who fail to remember the past are condemned to repeat it. It is important that we remember these events in history as they have forever shaped Malaysia as a nation - which is a point sometimes missed when STPM candidates have to sit for their examinations.

How can students get over their fear of sitting for the STPM Sejarah papers? We at Superprof say, fear not - learn about the marking scheme of your Sejarah papers and get some tips to write a proper Sejarah essay!

Sejarah in the Malaysia STPM syllabus

With the current STPM curriculum being conducted over three terms, the STPM Sejarah syllabus sees examinations being held in each term and students' results released at the end of each term. Form 6 students are assessed based on these centralised examinations, along with a school-based assessment which is in the form of project work. Let's take a look at Sejarah in the Malaysia STPM syllabus:

  • Kertas 1 (940/1): The first examination, which students will sit for at the end of Penggal 1, is one of the centralised assessments. It is a written examination that tests your knowledge of world history, in which students have to answer 4 out of the 6 essay questions in the paper. The total score for the paper is 80 marks, which carries a final weightage of 29% in your GPA.
  • Kertas 2 (940/2): At the end of Penggal 2, students sit for Kertas 2, which evaluates their knowledge of Islamic history. It is also a written examination where students are presented with 6 essay questions. This time, however, students only have to answer 3 out of the 6 questions. With a total score of 60 marks, this paper rounds up to a weightage of 22%.
  • Kertas 3 (940/3): The final centralised assessment, Kertas 3 assesses students' knowledge in Malaysian and Southeast Asian history. Similar to Kertas 1, students are to answer 4 out of the 6 questions for this written examination. A total score of 80 marks also weighs this paper at 29% in your final Sejarah GPA.
  • Kertas 4 (940/4): A school-based assessment, Kertas 4, is the project work paper that students will undergo throughout Penggal 2. Students are to choose 1 of the 4 themes to research and to write a paper based on the chosen theme. Your project work will be assessed by either your Sejarah teacher or an examiner appointed by your institution. With a total score of 50 marks, this paper carries the least weightage at 20%.

What is the STPM Sejarah syllabus marking scheme?

Ever wondered how your examiner is marking your STPM Sejarah essay? There are indeed a set of assessment techniques that examiners use to mark your essays. The points below explain how each STPM Sejarah essay is marked:

  • Leaving an impression: Your examiner will do a brief read or run-through of your essay, which will provide the first "impression" of what you have written. Therefore, it is vital that your introductory and closing paragraphs are clear and easy to understand, and that you have highlighted the key points in the body of your essay.
  • Putting a grade: The highest score for each essay is 20 marks - but what is the significance of each grade? Scoring 18 to 20 marks is considered Excellent, while Very Good is for a student who has scored 14 to 17 marks. Any mark below 10 will be considered as having written a Weak essay.
  • Using three symbols: Examiners use a set of letters, or PTK, to grade your essay. P stands for Knowledge (Pengetahuan), L represents Reasoning (Taakulan), and K means Communication (Komunikasi). Out of the 20 marks, Knowledge makes up 8 marks, while Reasoning and Communication each take up 6 marks.

The results released at the end of each term carry a specific Subject Grade Point (SGP), with 4.00 being the highest score. Your overall Grade Point Average (GPA) for STPM Sejarah will be calculated by taking into account your four highest SGPs in the subject. Is there an answer guide for STPM Sejarah Essay?

Now that you have an idea of how one of your STPM Malaysia subjects will be marked, let's move on to how you should answer those papers. Of the four papers, we're going to look at the three central assessments that require you to fill your answers in an essay format. What should you include in your essays? What should you avoid when writing STPM notes? This is the Superprof answer guide for STPM Sejarah essay writing:

  • Read, read, read that question: The best way to start off is by understanding what the essay questions are trying to convey. For instance, does the question ask you to explain the concept of feudalism from the 16th to 17th century or is it specifically for England? Read the essay questions at least twice to understand them before settling for the essay questions of your choice. You wouldn't want to go off-topic!
  • Create an outline: Now that you've chosen the essay questions you'd like to answer, it's time to make an outline or brief sketch for your essays. You can start by underlining the keywords in the question, such as "feudalism" and "England", and add them to your outline. Take a few minutes to structure the content of your essay. You can even create the outlines before writing all your essays if that is more efficient for you.
  • Use connectors: Indicate flow in between your sentences and paragraphs. Make full use of grammatical connectors, or penanda wacana, such as "next" (seterusnya), "in addition" (selain itu), "instead" (sebaliknya) and "therefore" (justeru itu). Using connectors correctly will allow you to better link related information together and ensure your sentences are clear for readers to understand.
  • The 5W1H: How should you add content to your essay? Easy as pie - use the 5W1H method (Siapa, Apa, Di mana, Bila, Kenapa, Bagaimana) to expand your ideas. Start your content with a key point or heading and use the 5W1H to add descriptions and examples that support the key point. It is also ideal to have at least 4 to 5 key points in your essay, starting with the most important key point (e.g. explain the concept of feudalism).

Finally, it is important to avoid certain errors that may affect your overall essay. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid repeating the same content or facts if you have already used them in previous paragraphs;
  • Avoid writing less than 4 paragraphs or more than 5 paragraphs for the body of your essay (this excludes the introductory and closing paragraphs);
  • Do separate your key points by putting them into different paragraphs;
  • Do write the Section (Bahagian) and Question Number (Nombor Soalan) on the answer sheet;
  • Do practise neat handwriting!
