Mathematics is fun!
Few might agree but some others might say, ‘Nope, Math is painful’.
Unfortunately, the truth is, most careers are coming out from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Almost all careers rely on the understanding of mathematics.
Mathematics consists of statistics, algebra, algorithms and more. However, for primary school level, you will only need a basic understanding in mathematics especially in numbers.
For parents, you can check out these tips on how to instill love in Mathematics for your kids.
- Start teaching math at an early age
- Give educational games to your kids to solve math problems such as puzzles, riddles, Lego, Jenga and more
- Teach them about money as simple as giving RM 1 for them to buy candy, if the money is not enough, they will need to save it and they will learn to count money occasionally.
- Let your kids help you out in the kitchen when baking as that is a good exposure in so few different topics, such as weight, shape, and numbers.
Since UPSR, the Primary School Examination has been abolished since early 2021, the students will only rely on the school-based assessment that is going to be done continuously all year round. The assessment objective is to totally migrate the exam-oriented mindset from parents and students.
Don't worry, as we go on, Superprof will uncover certain topics and explain how the primary school assessment is going to take place.
What is the Latest 2021 Mathematics KSSR Textbook?

Do you know that dual language Mathematics has been continued for KSSR subjects?
The option for language depends on the school’s choices. However, the education minister will filter schools that choose English as the teaching and learning medium. What is considered is the school performance in English language as well as teachers’ qualification.
Fret not, if you are comfortable learning Mathematics in English despite the learning medium at school being in Bahasa Melayu, you can still use English textbook to refer to. Here are some of the Mathematics KSSR Dual Language (DLP) textbooks 2021 and some others you can find on Google's Cloud:

KSSR Year 6 Mathematics Syllabus 2021
KSSR Mathematics will take 6 years to learn. Most of the courses from year 1 until year 6 revolve around the same topics – only the difficulty level will be different.
Here is the content that you will learn in the whole 6 years of your primary school.
Numbers And Operations | Measurement And Geometry | Relationship And Algebra | Statistics And Probability |
---|---|---|---|
Whole Numbers Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Mixed Operations Fractions Decimals Percentage Money | Time Length Mass Volume Of Liquid Three-Dimensional Shapes Two-Dimensional Shapes | Coordinate Ratio And Proportion | Data Handling Average |
Year 6 students will need to be able to master all these contents before you set foot in secondary school.
The primary school’s syllabus is the basic Mathematics that will be upgraded in high school’s syllabus. So, if you are weak at a certain topic, your high school journey wouldn’t be easy.
What are HOTs Questions for Year 6 KSSR?
Higher Order Thinking skills (HOTs) is introduced aiming to produce students who are well balanced holistically to walk out into the real world. The students will be equipped with thinking and communication skills, able to work in a team, resilient, well-informed, curious, and patriotic.
There are 4 skills that the students can develop by these HOTs questions which are shown in the table below.
HOTS | Description |
---|---|
Applying | Using knowledge, skills and values in different situations to carry out a task |
Analysing | Breaking down information into smaller parts in order to understand and make connections between these parts |
Evaluating | Making considerations and decisions using knowledge, experience, skills, and values, and giving justifications |
Creating | Producing an idea or products using creative and innovative methods |
HOTs question is easy to answer. It is just that the question isn’t a direct question that lets the students think deep on how to get the answer. Keep reminding the students that HOTs question isn’t something you need to be wary about.
It is simple, but you need to open your mind and think of the best solution. Most of the time, students will be thrilled when they find out how easy it is to answer HOTs Questions.
Before we get to the sample KSSR Questions, check out the Primary School Assessment format.
What are the Sample Questions for KSSR Primary 6 Assessment Test?
You can download the Standard Content and Recommendation for Learning Record that you can use to monitor your study progress during this PDPR, Teaching and Learning session from home.
Here are a few downloaded past year UPSR questions that you can refer to. Do not worry, even though UPSR is over, the questions from previous papers are still a good reference and can be a reliable practice sheet.
- UPSR Mathematics Paper 1 (2019)
- UPSR Mathematics Paper 2 (2019)
You can get the answer scheme for paper 1 and paper 2 from Superprof here.
Let us see how the HOTs question is applied to mathematical questions.
With HOTs
Ali, Amy, Emil and Abby collected RM 10 each to be donated to 8 different charity boxes at the mosque. How much money should they put in each box?
Well, this type of question looks complicated to answer.
First because the question is quite long. Students tend to hate reading lengthy questions. For them, a lengthy question is a complicated question.
Secondly, with HOTs the question isn’t direct. Students need to analyze the questions properly and think critically before answering.
Third, there are few different methods that the student can use to solve it. For weaker students, they will need to use the back door where the solution will be lengthy too.
However, no matter what the method used, as long as the answer is correct, it can be accepted.
Here is how the question will look like without the HOTs.
Without HOTs
10 x 4 = ___ x 8
‘Aaaaaaaa’, that is the usual sound of students when they find out how easy the question is.
Can you solve the question now?

How to Study Smart for Mathematics Subjects?

Learning Mathematics is fun if you don't have to stick your nose to the exercise books for hours. But how can you learn math faster if you don't do a lot of practice?
The answer is easy. Learn smart.
Yes, practice is a must, but you need to have a plan when you start studying. Here is how.
Apply mathematics to solve real-world problems
Math can be abstract and subjective. There are numerous formulas and ways to solve each problem. However, when you are trying to solve any simple daily-life problem with math, you’ll get familiar with the way to solve it.
Example:
- Do some baking. You can instill and improve a lot of mathematical skills just by baking. First, you’ll be able to convert the recipe quantities from kilogram, gram, litre, oz, and many more to any of your desired imperial system. Secondly, you’ll be able to understand the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
- Do some grocery shopping. Budget on how much you’d like to spend upfront and list down all the grocery items. Once done, head to the store and try to spend less than your budget but you can get all the items on your list. Here you’ll be able to think critically on how to save cost and spend less but still manage to buy everything.
Create a conducive space to study

Although math seems like a subject that you can do while playing your favourite song on Spotify, bear in mind, solving math equations requires your utmost concentration.
Avoid doing multiple tasks or studying in a distracting environment.
Download Mathematics applications to speed up the learning process
Hey, what is the use of all the latest technology if not for personal knowledge improvement?
Stop playing mobile legend, counter strike or DOTA only, but download few other online learning applications and games. Not to mention, you can easily get your hands on helpful online resources such as e-books, learning videos from Youtube, and Edu-TV.
