Wait, what? UPSR is abolished, why do we still have assessments

Yes, Good News! No matter how many types of examinations have been cancelled or discontinued, the assessments are still on-going. Without any assessment, you will never know where your level is, what your weakest topics are and how you can make improvement

Therefore, PBD (Pentaksiran Bilik Darjah), Classroom Assessment will continuously be done as part of the classroom activities. There will be many different types of assessment that can be conducted using various methods including oral and written work as well as demonstrations

The assessment can be in a form of  interview, quizzes, observation or research. The result from the assessment will be taken by teachers to rectify student’s misconception and weaknesses and take measures in conducting enrichment activities to improve student’s performance.

There will also be a School Assessment (SA) which is a summative assessment that will be conducted at the end of a unit, semester or year. This will be done during the teaching and learning session where the difference with the previous UPSR is the assessment will be done randomly and there will be no standardized timetable made specially for examination.

Meanwhile, Standard Reference Assessment (SRA) has been introduced to monitor the progress and improvement of the students. By using Performance Standard Based Curriculum and Assessment Document, teachers are able to understand the extent of the students’ knowledge on what they have learned and mastered.

Though, SRA doesn't compare the students’ performance and this will be assessed fairly based on the students’ talents, skills, capabilities, abilities and potentials

Here is the KSSR Mathematics Performance Level.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL
DESCRIPTOR
1Know basic mathematical knowledge.
2Know and understand basic mathematical knowledge.
3Know and understand basic mathematical knowledge to carry out basic mathematical operations and conversions.
4Know and understand mathematical knowledge to carry out steps in calculation for daily routine problems.
5Master and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in solving daily routine problems using various strategies.
6Master and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in solving daily non-routine problems creatively and innovatively.

Due to the confirmation of UPSR cancellation in March 2021, many primary school students cheered for it. Even the parents are already taking it lightly and are happy that they don't need to focus on their kids’ education anymore.

It is understandable with the current living situation where most of us are still in deep problems with the fluctuation in the economy and the pandemic recession. However, this is not the time to forget about the never-ending learning process.

Do not neglect the children’s education. Today might be hard to breathe, but with the power of knowledge and education, the future belongs to today’s kids. With the stay at home and movement control order set in place, it is easier to monitor the kids to study and learn.

It is very important for both parents and students to know what you’ll learn and skills gained from the subjects.

Why is math a crucial subject?

Why do we still need to learn math?

What can we do with math?

Can math help us in the future?

The answer is ‘Yes’ for all the above questions.

The mathematical learning for primary school will enable 4 thoughtful insights that are crucial for daily use.

  1. Learning areas
    1. Numbers and operations
    2. Statistics and probability
    3. Measurement and Geometry
    4. Relationship and Algebra
  2. Process encounter
    1. Reasoning
    2. Problem Solving
    3. Connection
    4. Communication
    5. Representing
  3. Skills acquired
    1. Mathematical skills
    2. Problem solving skills
    3. Analytical skills
    4. Research skills
    5. Information Communication Technology Skills
    6. Communication skills
  4. Attitude and Values nurtured
    1. Personality interaction, Procedure, intrinsic
    2. Perception, interest, appreciation, confidently resilient and perseverance.

If you look at the skills that you are going to acquire and all the values nurtured through the learning process, you will know that you are able to tackle the future with success

Math wouldn't stop at year 6 nor at SPM (Sijil Penilaian Malaysia) or High School Final Examination, but math is all around you. You will easily get cheated in life if you are weak at math. But if you are good at math, you are definitely going to do well in life, especially in managing your finances.

Even if you are unable to become rich, with the knowledge in Mathematics, you will never be poor.

“There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

-Wallace D. Wattles

What has changed in the KSSR 2021 Year 6 Mathematic Format?

In order to keep up with modernization, the syllabus for mathematics has been updated to align with the current necessities

The most obvious changes to the mathematics syllabus are the cross curricular elements introduced in the curriculum.

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Entrepreneurship in Mathematics
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

The students are now being exposed to the process of building creativity and innovation at an early stage to unlock hidden potential in themselves.

Students will leave schools with the ability to develop mathematical models, apply mathematical skills, be able to interconnect math with another discipline of knowledge, ability to find solutions by using math and create a conjecture especially in cause and effect.

Nonetheless, one of the crucial knowledge in life – Money , has been introduced early too. How to create money, how to manage your finances, how to become a successful person and more has been included in the syllabus.

Moreover, the advancement of ICT has led us to keep moving at a fast pace so we wouldn't be outdated. Thus the inclusion of these topics in the current syllabus.

Students are able to learn on how to handle hardware and software, learning with ICT, the exposure to various kinds of latest communication and information and how to use ICT effectively and its etiquette.

Today, it is impossible for students’ to get away from using technology in their daily life. Since the pandemic hit, everyone old and young has moved a step forward in using technology in their daily life. Students use it for teaching and learning sessions, whilst the adults use it for work
