UPSR (Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah) or Primary Schools Examination has been abolished early 2021, which has now left all the Year 6 students with only KSSR Assessment test.
What is the KSSR Assessment test?
KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah) is a national standard curriculum for primary school. Mathematics is a core subject that MUST be learnt by students as early as 7 years old. Students will attend primary school for 6 years before pursuing high school.
The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to prepare students for the tough 21st century challenges by increasing skills and values needed to achieve success. Whereby the aspects that have been identified are Thinking Skills, Career and Living Skills, and Values.
Thinking Skills are crucial in facing the fast pace of global advancement, even in daily life. They need to have great creativity, be able to think critically, have reasoning, be innovative, able to solve problems and make wise decisions.
In order to survive in the real world as well as when the student reaches the point to enter the working environment, they need to be an all-rounder and equipped with more skills in both career and living skills.
Here are few necessary skills to develop in order to survive in this era.
- Information and communication technology
- Lifelong learning
- Initiative and self-directed
To shape the students to become somebody with good characters and able to be a responsible person to everyone around; family, society, and nation, the KSSR developed a curriculum encompassing spirituality, humanity, patriotism, integrity, responsibility and unity too.

Wait, what? UPSR is abolished, why do we still have assessments?
Yes, Good News! No matter how many types of examinations have been cancelled or discontinued, the assessments are still on-going. Without any assessment, you will never know where your level is, what your weakest topics are and how you can make improvement.
Therefore, PBD (Pentaksiran Bilik Darjah), Classroom Assessment will continuously be done as part of the classroom activities. There will be many different types of assessment that can be conducted using various methods including oral and written work as well as demonstrations.
The assessment can be in a form of interview, quizzes, observation or research. The result from the assessment will be taken by teachers to rectify student’s misconception and weaknesses and take measures in conducting enrichment activities to improve student’s performance.
There will also be a School Assessment (SA) which is a summative assessment that will be conducted at the end of a unit, semester or year. This will be done during the teaching and learning session where the difference with the previous UPSR is the assessment will be done randomly and there will be no standardized timetable made specially for examination.
Meanwhile, Standard Reference Assessment (SRA) has been introduced to monitor the progress and improvement of the students. By using Performance Standard Based Curriculum and Assessment Document, teachers are able to understand the extent of the students’ knowledge on what they have learned and mastered.
Though, SRA doesn't compare the students’ performance and this will be assessed fairly based on the students’ talents, skills, capabilities, abilities and potentials.
Here is the KSSR Mathematics Performance Level.
|PERFORMANCE LEVEL||DESCRIPTOR |
|1||Know basic mathematical knowledge. |
|2||Know and understand basic mathematical knowledge. |
|3||Know and understand basic mathematical knowledge to carry out basic mathematical operations and conversions. |
|4||Know and understand mathematical knowledge to carry out steps in calculation for daily routine problems. |
|5||Master and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in solving daily routine problems using various strategies. |
|6||Master and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in solving daily non-routine problems creatively and innovatively. |

What is The Importance of Mathematics?
Due to the confirmation of UPSR cancellation in March 2021, many primary school students cheered for it. Even the parents are already taking it lightly and are happy that they don't need to focus on their kids’ education anymore.
It is understandable with the current living situation where most of us are still in deep problems with the fluctuation in the economy and the pandemic recession. However, this is not the time to forget about the never-ending learning process.
Do not neglect the children’s education. Today might be hard to breathe, but with the power of knowledge and education, the future belongs to today’s kids. With the stay at home and movement control order set in place, it is easier to monitor the kids to study and learn.
It is very important for both parents and students to know what you’ll learn and skills gained from the subjects.

But if you are good at math, you are definitely going to do well in life, especially in managing your finances.
Even if you are unable to become rich, with the knowledge in Mathematics, you will never be poor.
“There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
The students are now being exposed to the process of building creativity and innovation at an early stage to unlock hidden potential in themselves.
Students will leave schools with the ability to develop mathematical models, apply mathematical skills, be able to interconnect math with another discipline of knowledge, ability to find solutions by using math and create a conjecture especially in cause and effect.
Nonetheless, one of the crucial knowledge in life – Money , has been introduced early too. How to create money, how to manage your finances, how to become a successful person and more has been included in the syllabus.
Moreover, the advancement of ICT has led us to keep moving at a fast pace so we wouldn't be outdated. Thus the inclusion of these topics in the current syllabus.
