There are still some who say learning math is a waste of time and has no importance in life. Do you agree?
Math has been used in our daily life even without you realizing it. Think about what will happen if you are bad at math, how can you do American Pay?
When you go to a Mamak Stall and spend your time chit-chatting for hours, drinking Teh O Peng or Kopi O and eating Roti Canai, while your friends take a huge chunk of Chicken Drumstick and a plate of Nasi Kandar, would you divide the bill in half or let everybody pay by themselves?
At this point, if you lack math knowledge, you’ll definitely pay more than what you are supposed to pay. Still saying math is junk?
What if you go to the supermarket and see a 10% off advert for a 360g Cadbury which cost you RM 10, meanwhile a 200g Cadbury is RM 5.20? Which one will you choose?
Most will directly choose the one with discounted price right?
But those who learn math will choose the 200g Cadbury. Not because it is only RM 5.20, but if we count the weight, it is still cheaper. Here is why.
200g = RM 5.20
1g = RM 5.20/200g = RM 0.026
360g = RM 9.36
10% off RM 10 is RM 9.90
So, which one will you choose now?
Still unconvinced on the importance of math?
Did you know that in any kind of assessment that you are going to take, the most important thing to know is how the teachers are going to give you marks, what will make you lose marks and how to earn extra points in any way possible.
Some students are brilliant that they don't even need to show the steps on how they solve the problems and just write the answer on the paper. However, in terms of assessing the paper, showing the steps is very important. Without it, you might end up with zero marks.

What is DSKP for Primary School?
When it comes to assessment, many will start looking for the format, what type of questions are going to come up and where to look for model questions. Many have neglected the facts of the importance of knowing how you are going to be assessed.
You should always know that teachers won’t simply assess students without any standardized marking scheme. If they do, there is a possibility of unfairness occuring during the assessment. To maintain the quality of the test, the Examination board has developed a DSKP as a guideline for teachers’ assessment.
DSKP is the acronym for Dokumen Standard Kurikulum dan Pentaksiran which is a Standardized Curriculum and Assessment Document for each subject. This document lets the students know how far they have learned and understand a topic or unit in a subject matter.
DSKP has been formulated at the central level by the Curriculum Development Division and disseminated to schools that use the same curriculum to be implemented by teachers during the teaching and learning session in the classroom. There are 3 standards that matter: Content Standard, Performance Standard and Learning Standard.
Content Standard is the students’ outcome in learning that consists of knowledge gain, skills acquired and value aspects that the students are able to absorb.
Meanwhile, the Learning Standard is how far the students should have mastered the knowledge, skills, and values in measurable forms. However, this learning standard doesn't show any methods of teaching and learning.
To be able to unwrap students’ Performance Standard means that the teacher needs to be able to analyse and identify the level of students’ learning progress by the standard and indicator to measure the development in the aspects of knowledge, concepts and skills.

Performance Level Interpretation for the Latest Year 6 KSSR Mathematics Assessment
Ever since the government eliminated the exam-oriented assessment format, the marking guideline has become more subjective than ever.
Standard Performance Level has been introduced to help teachers assess the students’ level of learning development and their progression in the learning. The performance is described by one of more qualifiers that use appropriate words or phrases to show what is the learning outcome.
Each topic has its own level of interpretation.
There are 3 groups that will be evaluated on students’ performance level in Mathematics.
- Skills and processes
- Attitudes and Values in Mathematics
Assessment Scheme on Knowledge Interpretation Level for Mathematics
Students will be assessed based on their understanding of mathematical knowledge by topics. They will get the mastery level 6 if they have a great understanding in math and skills to solve problems. But if they only manage to know basic math, they will be on level 1 which is the lowest level on the evaluation scheme.

Overall Assessment for Performance Level in Mathematics.
The importance of the Performance Level Assessment Scheme is to allow teachers to make a justification on each of the students’ level of mathematics understanding and knowledge. Compared to exam-oriented assessment methods, in which we can only assess students’ ability to answer questions without any other external or additional factors, in-class assessment (PBD) is way better to build a better student.
The best student with an overall assessment of 6 will come up with the ability to solve most non-routine problems. They can use mathematical process skills and have a good attitude and values related to mathematics in daily life. The students are able to show leadership skills and other soft skills as they might be a role model to peers.
The assessment is guaranteed to be fair as the teacher will need to justify each student's capabilities, abilities, talents, potentials, and skills without comparing them with other students. The assessment is done only on one individual.
“Mathematics is not about numbers, equation, computations, or algorithms: it is about Understanding”
-William Paul Thurston
Mathematics exists all around us. The abolishment of UPSR allows students to not learn math for the sake of getting A’s in the examination. With the continuous assessment, versatility on how the students are going to get assessed, Mathematics is not going to be as stressful as it was.
However, one should not take things for granted. There will still be Mathematics examinations that you are going to take in the near future, Pentaksiran Tingakatan 3 (PT3) and Sijil Penilaian Malaysia (SPM).
The importance of examination is still needed to measure each individuals’ knowledge as education is one point that can be differentiated with numbers and percentage. Thus, it is never too early to start working on your Mathematics.
You can always self-learn Mathematics by doing a lot of practice. Alternatively, if you need some guidance, you can try to look for extra Mathematics classes or personal tutors.
