FAQs

🔬 What are the core concepts of biology?

The fundamentals of biology rest on a handful of key principles.

The key elements include:

  • Cells and cell biology: the smallest functional units of life, with organelles that keep everything running.
  • Genetics and DNA: the science of inheritance, mutation and genetic variation.
  • Ecology and ecosystems: how organisms interact with each other and their environment.
  • Human physiology: the study of body functions, from breathing and digestion to homeostasis.
  • Photosynthesis and respiration: how plants convert sunlight into energy and how cells release it.

With these basics down, more advanced topics like biotechnology and evolution become approachable.

💰 How much should I expect to pay for biology tuition in Alor Setar?

Biology tutors in Alor Setar typically charge RM38/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

  • Your study stage and learning goals (school revision or exam preparation)
  • The tutor's credentials and track record with past students
  • The duration and frequency of lessons
  • Where the sessions take place — home tuition tends to cost slightly more than online

Online biology lessons are often more affordable while remaining fully effective.

🧬 How do you get better at biology?

Learning biology effectively requires a structured, active method.

The techniques that work best include:

  • Active recall: use closed-book questions and self-quizzes to lock concepts in for the long term.
  • Diagrams and labelling: practise labelling cell organelles, body systems and ecosystem cycles by hand.
  • Past year papers: work through SPM, IGCSE, A-Level or STPM trial papers under timed conditions.
  • Concept linking: relate everyday examples (your own breathing, a houseplant, a fish in the ocean) to the theory.
  • Spaced repetition: revisit each topic over increasing intervals — days, then weeks, then months.

Following these steps leads to rapid improvement, especially in tricky topics like genetics or homeostasis.

Mastering Biology Made Easy in Alor Setar

Mycology is like the botanical version of fungi, and it's all about understanding this amazing kingdom of life. Mycologists are often regarded as a subset of microbiologists by many scientists. That's how important they are! Mycologists are these excellent scientists who dedicate their careers to studying all things fungi.

Scientists have discovered and named over 70,000 fungal species. However, there could be up to 20 times that many species out there, which means we might have around 1.5 million different types of fungi on our planet. That's way more than the number of flowering plants we know about. It's mind-boggling how vast and mysterious the fungi kingdom is!

Humans have had a long-lasting relationship with fungi, even before agriculture. Ancient hunter-gatherers in Europe were munching on mushrooms as early as 18,000 years ago. We've been finding all sorts of incredible uses for fungi ever since!

The next time you enjoy the benefits of fungi, remember to give a shout-out to mycology and these incredible scientists who continue to unravel the secrets of this fascinating kingdom of life.

The Importance of Fungi in Our Lives

Around 500 million years ago, life thrived in the oceans but not yet on land. Initially, there were some algae in ponds and bacteria near beaches, but not much else. However, fungi emerged as remarkable organisms that can break down rocks into soil, thanks to their external digestive enzymes and mechanical pressure. This breakthrough allowed plants to grow by accessing nutrients previously unavailable to any other creatures at that time.

These ancient fungi partnered with "proto-plants," simple organisms capable of photosynthesis. This symbiosis between the fungi (providing minerals) and the first land plants (with their photosynthetic abilities) enabled both to thrive and spread across the land. As time passed, this collaboration paved the way for newer plant species to evolve, gradually becoming less dependent on fungi. Yet, even today, fungi play a crucial role in the survival of over 90% of all plant species, maintaining a lasting relationship known as mycorrhizae.

Over 5,000 years ago, a man died in the Austrian-Italian Alps. Later discovered in 1991 by two tourists, his frozen body was named "Otzi the Iceman" and is Europe's oldest known natural human mummy. Interestingly, Otzi carried a sash containing various species of mushrooms, including birch fungus, which possesses anti-parasitic properties and may have been used for medicinal purposes. These mushrooms also served as tinder for creating fire.

Notably, Otzi's body displayed 61 marks that align remarkably well with acupuncture points recognised today for treating ailments. This suggests the possible use of acupuncture, a practice known in China thousands of years later, much earlier than previously recorded.

Did you know that the life-saving antibiotic penicillin is produced by a fungus called Penicillium? It's incredible how this discovery happened almost 100 years ago by accident. Alexander Fleming noticed a mould-killing bacteria on a neglected Petri dish! Ever since then, penicillin has worked wonders, saving millions of lives and even adding an extra 20 years to our life expectancy globally. It has also made medical procedures like caesareans and organ transplants much safer by reducing the risk of infection.
