Although English is the most widely spoken language globally with a number of 1.132 million speakers around the world, it is still one of the hardest languages to master, especially with all the mechanics of the language: grammar, pronunciation, punctuation, spelling, and so forth. Without proper guidance and teaching from a good tutor, it is no easy feat to be proficient in the language. However, how does one become a good English tutor, and is teaching the language just as hard as studying it? Well, we don’t believe so! So long as you are a master of the language, you can teach it without any problems. But, the question is, how?
While you may be a master of the English language from the constant listening to audiobooks, scribbling footnotes in a notebook especially for English, never-ending writing practices, and incessant days of reading English novels, it can still be a huge challenge for you to start teaching the language. Where do you even start? How do you even begin to explain the grammatical do's and don’ts? Can you teach English in your mother tongue so the students can understand better?
Well, fret not! Even as a beginner, teaching English can be a breeze. The main objective is to always let your students have fun and let them relate to the examples in the lesson so they can understand it better. Hence, it is not necessary for you to teach in your mother tongue to ensure they understand better. After all, teaching the language while fully using the language will really upgrade their comprehension skills. Although it may be hard for them at first (and maybe for you too when they don’t understand), once their command of the English language is stronger in the long run, they will surely thank you.
Apart from making lessons relatable, you can also opt to teach using materials that will most appeal to your audience of students. For instance, if your students are around the 15-18-year-old benchmark, you can appeal to them by referencing things that are trending around the Internet. This way, not only will they find the class fun and interesting, they will surely look up to you more as a tutor, and as someone, they can rely on when they are having trouble with their studies due to the bond formed. However, younger children may be a tougher feat as they can be easily distracted and lose interest after a while.
Truthfully, teaching English to young children may be tough but it is not impossible! In fact, as you get used to teaching them and they get used to you as a tutor, it will get easier and easier for you to teach without the children losing interest and focus.
When teaching young children, it is important to ensure they have fun in the class. Constantly try to relate the exercises and activities within the syllabus to their everyday lives such as asking, “What are your favorite fruits?” to improve vocabulary or just enjoy a casual conversation with them in between lessons so as to improve their speaking skills. In the event the students are losing focus, interact with them as much as possible. For instance, if a page requires reading a text, you can call out different students to read different paragraphs or dialogues. Not only will this retain their focus for the class, it will also allow you to listen to and correct their pronunciation.
But, how about grammar? Grammar may be a bit tricky to explain to younger children as they may not fully understand what a past continuous tense is or what a predicate means. You can attempt to your best extent to explain to the students the mechanics and rules of grammar of the English language, but it may still be a bit too complicated for them to understand. So, how can you go about this problem?
Well, instead of just explaining it to them word for word, try implementing the explanation in textual form. Compared to telling them how and when to use definite and indefinite articles, show them instead! Write down how and when you would use these articles. You should also make room for the children to discuss and think by asking them stimulating questions such as, “What is the past tense of the word ‘go’? Is it a regular or irregular verb?”
Another effective method is to encourage language play. Give your students a few sentences filled with the components of grammar, and ask them to split the sentences into shorter parts. This will allow them to differentiate which part of the sentence is a subject and a predicate. They can also discover the articles included in the sentences, among many other grammatical components such as the different tenses too.
But, what are the benefits of learning English as compared to teaching it?
As English is the most spoken language all around the world, it is definitely a language you would want to learn and master. There are many benefits as to why an individual should choose to learn English as a second language.
Most companies nowadays are looking for potential employees who are proficient in multiple languages, with English being one of the most important languages that the employee should master, or at least be able to communicate in. Hence, being proficient in the English language will definitely increase your career prospects.
Additionally, you can also be proficient in English as a means to communicate in your everyday lives too. Especially, if you are traveling to Miri, Sarawak; the second biggest town in the state. While the main language in Miri is Bahasa Melayu, including its variations, most residents in Miri speak English just as well.
If you are a Miri resident looking to improve your English language skills; look no further! Here at Superprof, you can always tap into searching for a tutor who is within your vicinity, whether it be Miri or anywhere else in Sarawak! And you do not have to worry about paying a high sum as well, as each of our tutors here in Superprof, who are academically verified, have different rates that you can choose to your own viability!
