Every individual and society embodies a living history. The languages we communicate in have been passed down through generations. Our cultures, traditions, and religions are all products of the past. Recognising these connections provides a fundamental comprehension of the human condition.
In the spirit of learning history, let's look at the history of our beloved country Malaysia.
A Brief History of Malaysia
According to historical accounts, Malaysia's origins can be traced back to the Sultanate of Malacca, which existed around 1400 AD. During its heyday, the Sultanate of Malacca encompassed a significant portion of the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. The rise of Malacca as a prominent government was largely attributed to its advantageous geographical location, serving as a crucial meeting point between East Asia and the Middle East.
The Portuguese takeover of Malacca in 1511 marked the beginning of the colonial period in Malaya. Subsequently, the Dutch gained control in 1641, followed by the British in 1824 due to the Anglo-Dutch Treaty. Of all the colonial powers, British rule endured the longest.
The Japanese arrival in late 1941 occurred just as the people of this nation were eagerly seeking to put an end to foreign intervention. Japan maintained control over Malaya until 1945 when they surrendered due to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The period between World War II's end and the Malayan Union's establishment saw the British Military Administration (BMA) taking control. The British officially established the Malayan Union on April 1, 1946. However, this idea faced opposition from the Malays, who objected to the abolition of royal institutions and the erosion of Malay privileges
The unity among the three major ethnic groups, namely Malays, Chinese, and Indians, led to the signing of the London Agreement on February 8, 1956. This agreement indicated that Malaya was on track to achieve independence on August 31, 1957.
In 1961, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Alhaj proposed the merger of five colonies, namely Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei, to form a new country. Then, representatives from the British government, Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (excluding Brunei) reached an unavoidable decision. The desire to form a state called Malaysia was realised on September 16, 1963.
