It is fascinating to think about the impact that mathematicians have had on our world. They may not have the same level of fame as pop artists, but their contributions have been invaluable, which makes you wonder what other secrets they have yet to uncover.
Mathematicians have played such an extremely crucial role in shaping the technology and advancements that we rely on today. And it's even more fascinating to learn about the specific individuals who have made such contributions, like John Napier, who was born in Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh.
Revolutionary Contribution of John Napier in the Field of Mathematics
In keeping with the tradition of noble families, Napier did not receive a formal education but instead had tutors at home. At the age of 13, he started attending St Salvator’s College at the University of St Andrews. Although he didn't complete a degree, he later received higher education in Europe before returning to his homeland in 1571.
During his free time, Napier dedicated himself to the endeavour of mathematical research. In early 1594, he began working on logarithms, and by 1614, he published his famous and instrumental work, "A Description of the Wonderful Law of Logarithms." In this book, he not only explained logarithms but also provided logarithm tables, which greatly simplified mathematical operations like multiplication. These are now known as natural logarithms. Translated versions of his book were also available in various languages in subsequent years.
Napier's groundbreaking work caught the attention of many mathematicians, including Henry Briggs, a professor at Gresham College. In 1615, Briggs travelled to Scotland to collaborate with Napier in revising the logarithm table, making calculations even easier and more efficient. The revised table was published in 1624 and became known as the table of common logarithms. This remarkable mathematical achievement had many applications, including in astronomy and physics.
Among Napier's other famous inventions is Napier’s bones, which provided a mechanical method for multiplication and division. This device utilised ivory rods with a bone-like structure, hence the name Napier’s bones. He explained the workings of this incredible invention in his book "Rabdologiae; seu Numerationes per Virgulas libri duo" in 1617. The invention of Napier’s bones paved the way for future developments such as analog computers and slide rules.
Napier, along with his friend Henry Briggs, delved into the fascinating world of trigonometry, creating what is now known as Napier's analogies. One of his notable contributions in this field was his Rules of Circular Parts, which established theorems in spherical trigonometry.
In addition to his groundbreaking logarithm tables, Napier also dedicated himself to the computation of logarithms. Unfortunately, his work remained unpublished during his lifetime. However, after his passing in 1617, it finally saw the light of day in 1920 as Mirifici logarithmorum canonis construction.
