About SATO

Hi everyone! I'm a Japanese teacher in Birmingham/Sutton Coldfield. I grew up in Tokyo Japan, worked in various industries in Japan and America, including international film festivals (as an organiser), research institute (as a researcher), charity organisaion for environment, and schools (as a teacher) etc. I studied social anthropology and hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology. I currently live in Birmingham UK and teach Japanese online and in classrooms (a British boarding school and Saturday Japanese school). I can help you learn from basic Japanese to GCSE, A level or travel, survival, business, or even academic level if you like! I love arts, music, reading, gardening, DIY, cooking, baking, eating, crafting, painting, soap making, knitting, traveling, walking, scuba diving, skiing, “Onsen” natural hot spring spas...and much more!

I have been teaching Japanese for over 10 years for pupils at Primary school, GCSE, A level, as well as undergraduate and master’s degrees students from various universities such as London SOAS, Warwick, Sheffield, York, Durham. I also taught adult tutees for their casual conversations and JLPT exam preparation. I teach GCSE and A levels at a boarding school in Shropshire both in class room and online. I really enjoy teaching the language and culture to those who are willing to learn more. My tutees tend to learn with me for multiple years, so I try various methods and approaches to keep their interests going. Some of them leant with me for 10 years! :-) So I hope you will like my lessons, too!

About the lesson

I'm a very strict teacher who would… no I'm only kidding! I am an easy-going, patient, and experienced teacher. I can help make your learning journey much easier and joyful one. I use various materials such as textbooks, online articles, original files or free flow conversations - answering any questions you come up with. I am flexible and would love to discuss what your aim/target is when we start (first lesson is free trial). I can also tell you about Japanese culture both in traditional and modern/pop field that you might be interested in and to help you want to learn even more about Japanese language and culture in future! It's all tailor-made lessons for you :-) My background is not exactly coming from teaching, and I believe that is where my strength is as a teacher. I used to study cultural studies / social anthropology up to master’s degree in Japan. I have been always fascinated by learning and knowing different society, culture and people. I used to work as an international film festival director, interpreter/translator, environmental -social NPO worker, researcher (environment and energy) for a research institute in addition to working as a teacher. I traveled a lot before living in the UK. My wide range of experiences of living in different countries as well as working for various industries can contribute to my lessons to be more interesting and informative for you (I hope!). I have excellent communication skills, patience, passion to teach, and curiosity to learn new things.

With Sato's dedication and hard work, we put on two events - an introductory session to Japanese language and a Japanese food demonstration. It was clear that Sato worked really hard before the sessions to create interesting and relevant content. During the session, Sato was very welcoming and helped to put us all at ease. Although this was not a typical class, Sato was very adaptable and was not put off. It was really nice to get her know her during the short time that we worked on this project and I would happily work with her again, and recommend her to others. Thank you Sato X
