About Patrick
I'm studying biochemistry with the vision to start a company making mass produced lab grown food to help prevent the starvation/malnutrition/climate/animal cruelty crises around the world. I have been a finalist in national youth science competitions (e.g. The Big Bang Fair), in which I discovered a new type of neuron in fruit flies while searching for a way to prevent hereditary blindness in humans. I have extensive lab experience, I was the 2nd year to do the new A levels so I have a better understanding of the curriculum than most tutors available, and I was part of a tutoring team for younger students at my secondary school. Biochemistry is my life passion and I hope to give that to other people as well (or at least just get you through your exams).

I start off with a short series of statements about whatever I'll be teaching that give a broad overview of the topic and how it relates to the real world, and check that these have been understood by all students involved. If not, then I'll explain as much as I need to while also adding in extra details and examples for any other students who have already understood. I aim to make sure no one gets bored by not just reading off facts, but instead showing my students this information doesn't exist in a vacuum - the medicine they will use throughout their lives and the way their body heals damage is all underpinned by the seemingly boring stuff. As soon as students put the cutting edge science in the news together with the content of exams they have to do, they inevitably find interest to also do learning for themselves. The second part of the lesson will be a university lecture style explanation of the topic being covered, completely open to questions throughout. The third part of these lessons will be going over exam technique, and useful ways to deal with the annoyance of having your intelligence tested in a stressful 2 hour paper. I'll provide flashcard templates, ways of making effective mnemonics, and can even help teach students how to read real scientific papers if wanted (the most useful skill for anyone aiming to get into biochemistry given the pace of development in field). Towards the point of applying to university, I will also help my students write good CVs and find work experience where possible.
