About Yara

I am a physiology and immunology university of Toronto student who hopes to pursue medical school in the future. As an individual who has tutored for over 3 years, it is truly rewarding to see students unlock their full potential and to witness all the progress they make over the course of tutoring. I have started up my own organization which aims to better orient students from grade 12 into university, as well as providing them with the proper academic tools in order to excel - we have helped over 35 students through this initiative.

About the lesson

I do not have a strict teaching methodology - each person is a different learner, some prefer visual-based learning, others prefer writing-based and some prefer auditory-learning. For me, it is important that I know what the student prefers in order to gain the most progress in our teaching sessions - and to tailor each lesson to their needs. The basis of each class is, prior to meeting - the student will send me their list of concerns for the subject being taught - I will prepare a basic outline of what will be discussed as well as a checklist for the student to keep track of during the tutoring session as well as for their own review. Following review of concepts, the student will apply the knowledge learned by solving a series of questions. I really like to foster active learning - learning the information is important, but being able to apply it is just as important, if not more. I emphasize understanding over memorization - in biology and chemistry, there are central themes that carry over from one topic to another - if the student understands the basis of the theme, they will be able to more easily understand, rather than memorize, concepts.

I am able to teach up to grade 12 Biology & Chemistry as well as university-level physiology & biology.
