About Peter

I am a 35 y.o Aerospace Development Engineer who followed a very non-traditional path. Having started working on cars as a child, I learned to weld at the age of 10 and upon graduating high school immediately started an automotive repair and restoration business, not returning to college until the age of 26. During that time I used real-world experience to vet which domain I chose to attend college for, aligned with my own abilities and passion. While running limited operations in my business, I began in community college studying as a mechanical engineering transfer, setting personal academic records on the dean's list and involving myself in the culture as a math and physics tutor for convenient income. That's where I realized tutoring/mentoring others in Algebra and intro Physics significantly improved my cognitive abilities in more difficult advanced classes. I transferred to the University of Pittsburgh studying mechanical engineering, switching to purely Physics after a few semesters. I found my hands-on business experience had encompassed the fundamentals of engineering and to me the real value was in the principal mechanics of how the universe operates. During this time I returned to tutoring, the immediate improvement I saw in my own Advanced Calculus classes along with its application in Physics kept me tutoring until I saw enough students genuinely improve that it became fun to watch my students develop and succeed. After completing roughly 160 college credits, enough to substantiate an independent degree in Physics with dual minor in Mathematics and Chemistry, I was financially forced to return to work having not earned any official degree but leaving with the knowledge I had come for. I put my skills to use, working multiple engineering technician roles before following my passion as a welder to sustainable income. While working as a welder & fabricator for 2 years, I planned my personal development and finally took my shot at applying to real engineering jobs without a degree. I got lucky with a foot in the door at Pratt & Whitney as a Manufacturing Engineer specializing in Weld Engineering (The black magic degree) and my self-education wrote the story for me from there. After a short 6 months, I was poached by Collins Aerospace for an emergency manufacturing line startup of hand-made, flight-critical, Heat Exchangers and seized the opportunity. My shop floor, real-world, hands-on experience set me apart from some of the best engineers RTX could find and within 12 months was an L8 engineer running daily meetings with executives and leading EMOC projects. In my first 18 months as an engineer, my team was awarded engineering team of the year and I was nominated for engineer of the year. Once sustainable operations were underway I moved on to a smaller jet engine OEM supplier and MRO service provider as a Development Engineer focused on acquiring coveted Source Approval operations through design, development, and validation of manufacturing processes meeting the precision specifications of P&W and GE. Most recently I have started my own business designing and developing embedded computer systems with proprietary architecture. I am in the process of writing several white papers for my innovative work to be peer-reviewed by the American Physical Society and need to brush up on my fundamentals to increase the ol math/physics pen to paper efficiency rate over the next couple of years. I look forward to having some fun, learning new things, and providing a safe environment for students to learn while they dream.

I approach tutoring as a mutually beneficial arrangement from both the perspective of a mentor and a peer. I enjoy continuous refinement of my fundamental skills in physics, mathematics, and engineering. I approach problem-solving with students at their level naturally with passion and patience. I get enjoyment from watching a student truly develop their talents and, in turn, themselves. Having real-world experience applying my knowledge at all levels of difficulty, from elementary algebra to quantum mechanics, I intrinsically teach the details that make professionals in the field stop and take notice. I like to begin with reviewing the class syllabus before we meet so I understand the full scope of what needs to be learned through the semester and slowly find our true level of understanding to build on in the first few sessions. I encourage independent thought development with overarching oversight that allows a natural guidance towards key goals. Each student is different with their learning styles and I readily can pick up on what works, no plug and chug, actual learning made fun through achievement.
