About Antonia
I am first generation American, born in the United States. As an infant my family returned to Ecuador for several years resulting in Spanish being my first language. At the age of eight, I was radically immersed in American culture upon our return to the States. For a long time, I lost my native tongue and aspired to one day regain it. By chance many years later, I was given the opportunity to teach English and love it! This opportunity not only challenged my own knowledge of English, but it challenged my way of teaching to an audience of Spanish speaking students. Now reflecting, I can say that teaching English was my way to recover my native tongue. Soy estadounidense de primera generación, nacida en Estados Unidos. De bebé, mi familia regresó a Ecuador por varios años, y el español se convirtió en mi primera lengua. A los ocho años, al regresar a Estados Unidos, me sumergí radicalmente en la cultura estadounidense. Durante mucho tiempo, perdí mi lengua materna y aspiré a recuperarla algún día. Muchos años después, por casualidad, tuve la oportunidad de enseñar inglés, ¡y me encantó! Esta oportunidad no solo revolucionó mis conocimientos de inglés, sino también mi forma de enseñar a un público hispanohablante. Ahora, reflexionando, puedo decir que enseñar inglés fue mi forma de recuperar mi lengua materna.
