About Dhanya

Holding a Graduate degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics coupled with 7 years of industry experience, I have had extensive training in working with diverse stakeholders and students alike. I have a great Love of learning and self-growth and as such, I love to share and teach what I have learnt.
It gives me the greatest pleasure to contribute towards community upliftment especially when it comes to teaching and helping young people realize their potential. Whether it was being a teaching-assistant for first year undergraduate students while completing my MSc in applied math, or working within multidisciplinary team environments as I pursued my professional experience and growth, the training always came down to 2 things:
-Communicating so that the other person understands
-Building relations via constructive, compassion driven dialogue.

I am currently pursuing a second masters degree in Environmental Science and thus have had the opportunity to further my teaching assistantship and tutoring experience. This additional experience, as I complete this degree, has helped me to realize where my long term career will land - it will be within the realm of helping shape youth and young adults to be strong, positive contributors to community upliftment. As such, I am deeply passionate about and seeking more opportunities to engage with youth and young adults within learning environments. I thoroughly enjoy sharing what I have learnt in addition to being a teacher/tutor. So don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to get to know me better, I've got you!

My approach to teaching and tutoring are similar but vary according to their inherent context.
With Teaching, my approach tends to be:
'not by the book'. Meaning, though I would follow the curriculum syllabus, how I disseminate the knowledge is rooted in turning all theoretical information into practical, tangible and relatable examples and problems. Both as a Teaching Assistant at University as well as being a student myself, I noticed a learning gap especially when it came to the sciences. It's not enough to just 'know' how to apply theoretical knowledge - the key is to really internalize that knowledge so that it is a part of you, you relate to it. Practicing on both myself and students, I noticed that not only do you truly understand the knowledge but you actually enjoy it.
With Tutoring, my approach tends to be:
Very similar to Teaching except with the added caveat to catering my approach to suite that individual student's needs. I.e. if it is more important to focus on foundational knowledge and theory then I would adjust my approach to that. Basically whatever meets the need of the student to their maximum benefit.
My Teaching methodology and Techniques follow the recipe of: A review of the previous week's lesson and notes with references to relevant chapters/examples in the textbook and extracting the key concepts, theories or formulas learned. Pausing here to ensure students have to floor to ask questions and clear all confusion as it relates to core concepts and examples covered in class. Following this, I would go through customized problems and examples highlighting how each concept is being applied and utilized and ensuring the student understands how the concepts are being used along the way. Whether teaching or one on one tutoring, I usually end with cementing what was learned with tangible ways to internalize that knowledge (i.e. why is it even useful for me to know this outside of getting a job?)
The above is the template I would use for a typical lesson plan.
What would set me apart as a tutor is not only my diverse experience in teaching students ranging from high-school to 4th year undergraduate students, but I believe my approach as well. Because my background encompasses a graduate degree in applied mathematics and statistics followed with several years of industry experience, I have had the opportunity to interact, engage and build meaningful relations with a diverse group of people. In addition to academic and professional experience, I am deeply passionate about community involvement and volunteer work. As such I have volunteered at community centers having the precious opportunity to interact with children, helping other volunteers teach and build community programs for children and families. The opportunity to cultivate diverse experience has helped me realize my passion and what I love to do; which is working with the community, especially children and young adults. I am deeply passionate about cultivating learning, sharing and growing spaces so that healthy, strong communities can be built. I believe this is what sets me apart as a tutor.
The lesson plans that I am capable of building range from school level to degree level as my experience highlights above. My collective experience and passion will allow me to cater lesson plans to specific individual needs as well as group needs.
