About Tyler

I currently teach 1st year undergraduate architecture students - these students learn the absolute basics of architectural design and come from a variety of academic backgrounds. In addition to this, I also teach 5th year master students focusing on professional skills as well as the more theoretical side of architecture.
As well as teaching, I am a architect with over 9 years professional experience. I have experience tutoring within university environments, 1:1 mentoring, being brought in as a guest critic (undergrad and postgrad) and I have experience teaching CAD skills (autodesk, microstation, rhino, adobe suite, affinity suite etc) to 2nd &3rd year undergraduate students for 3 years. This included helping with presentation techniques and design queries. I have also led architectural design workshops for young people between the ages of 10-16.

About the lesson

My teaching methodology is largely dependent on the level of experience and age of the student.

For university students, my methodology is focused on what skills they wish to gain. For example, I create easy to follow tutorials for CAD skills, where they can explore and discover how each of the programs work in isolation or in tandem. This approach can pin point and target development areas which can then be discussed further. In contrast to this I also work on verbal and visual/graphic presentation, where by students can gain tips on how to present their own ideas and present their project successfully and confidently to others.

For younger students, my methodology is much looser as the aim is to understand and discover what architecture is and how creative minds can develop. I usually take young people through an interactive tour of their cities or cities they may have heard of, creating a small design project, where they are given a design brief and time to produce a model of their design. Other activities include set design of their street, fashion design, anything that can get them modelling and presentation skills to help build confidence in group scenarios.

Both methodologies are extremely fun and useful as it provides the opportunity to think differently about architecture, design and communication.

My main goal is to foster confidence and encourage the students I work with. I aim to create a space where the world of design is accessible for all.
