About Chee Hou
My passion for craftsmanship and the art of working with your hands has always been at the heart of everything I do. As a full-time woodcraft artist with a Master's degree in Architecture from Oxford Brookes University, UK — one of Britain's top-ranked architecture schools — I bring a strong design sensibility and technical precision to everything I create — and everything I teach.
Danish cord weaving is one of the many craft skills I have come to deeply appreciate — a timeless Scandinavian tradition that transforms simple materials into beautiful, functional pieces you'll be proud to bring home. It is something I feel compelled to share, and I hope to open this craft up to anyone curious enough to try.
What excites me most about this skill is its versatility. Once learned, it doesn't stop at the workshop door. You can apply it to create entirely new furniture pieces, breathe new life into old or neglected chairs and stools, or push further into your own artistic territory — developing unique patterns and weaving styles that are entirely your own. It is a skill that grows with you.
My approach to teaching is rooted in patience and encouragement — I believe anyone can learn this craft regardless of their background, and I tailor every session to ensure no one feels lost or left behind.
My workshops are held in my own woodworking studio — a hands-on, industrial-feel space where craftsmanship is lived and breathed every day. It's an environment that inspires making, and there's something uniquely fitting about learning a tactile, material craft surrounded by the tools and textures of a working workshop.
Sessions are intentionally kept small and intimate, creating a relaxed atmosphere where beginners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and discovering the quiet satisfaction of making something with their own hands.
I teach in English and Mandarin, with basic Malay available — making my workshops accessible to a wide range of learners across the Klang Valley community.
Whether you're looking to learn a transferable skill, restore a beloved piece of furniture, create something meaningful for your home, or simply enjoy a focused and fulfilling afternoon in a one-of-a-kind setting — I'd love to guide you through it.

(Teaching Approach & Methodology)
My teaching philosophy is simple — no one should feel lost or intimidated when learning a new craft. I break down the Danish cord weaving process into clear, manageable steps, guiding each participant from the very beginning through to a completed, finished piece. Rather than demonstrating and expecting students to follow, I work alongside each person, observing their progress and stepping in with hands-on guidance whenever needed.
I place great emphasis on understanding the why behind each step — the tension, the pattern, the structure — so that students leave not just having completed a project, but genuinely understanding the craft well enough to apply it independently in the future.
(Typical Lesson Structure)
Each workshop runs as a focused, immersive single session lasting 4 hours including breaks. This format allows participants to complete an entire Danish cord weaving piece from start to finish in one sitting — walking away with something real and tangible to bring home.
The session is structured as follows:
- Brief introduction to Danish cord weaving, materials and tools
- Frame preparation — marking and setting up for cord positioning
- Cord preparation and shuttle setup
- The weaving process — wrapping, tightening, and pattern building
- Final adjustments and finishing
- Proud moment — your completed piece is ready to go home
(Qualifications & Experience)
I hold a Master's degree in Architecture from Oxford Brookes University, UK — one of Britain's top-ranked architecture schools. This foundation gives me a strong understanding of structure, proportion, and design that I bring directly into how I approach and teach craft.
As a full-time woodcraft artist, working with materials and making things by hand is not a hobby for me — it is my daily practice. Danish cord weaving is one of the many skills I have come to deeply appreciate within the broader world of woodcraft, and sharing it with others is something I feel genuinely compelled to do.
(Who Are My Lessons For)
My workshops are designed for complete beginners — no prior experience in weaving, woodworking, or any craft is required whatsoever. If you can follow instructions and enjoy working with your hands, you are ready.
The workshop is best suited for adults and mature teenagers. The weaving process involves focused hand and finger work that requires a degree of strength and dexterity more naturally suited to adult learners. Younger children are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by a participating adult, as the craft demands hand and finger strength that may be challenging for young children to manage independently.
The workshop is equally suitable for individuals, friends attending together, or pairs — a popular choice for those looking for a shared creative experience.
Upon completing the workshop, participants will have the skills and confidence to apply Danish cord weaving beyond the classroom — whether to create new furniture pieces, restore and refurbish old chairs and stools, or develop their own unique patterns and artistic expressions.
