About Denise

Jazz improvisation and music theory form the backbone of my piano instruction. I admit that I am a stickler for good posture and hand position, even if it feels tedious at first. With a BFA Musical Theater degree, I approach piano as a theatrical tool that requires dynamics and expression.

Over 8 years of experience, I have helped 323 students master rhythm and timing. My methods include rigorous memorization techniques and ear training that translate into pop and contemporary success. Watching a student move from absolute beginner to a confident player brings me immense joy. The steady progress we make together provides a unique sense of accomplishment.

About the lesson

Personalizing a plan starts by ignoring what you think you should play and focusing on how you actually hear music. I begin with a diagnostic playing assessment to see where your natural inclinations lie before we set a learning plan.

Adults and performance students often struggle with the transition from reading dots on a page to understanding the theory underneath. Because I hold a BFA Musical Theatre degree, I frame musical concepts in ways that make sense for both the heart and the brain.

We spend our time refining your touch and ensuring your rhythm is rock solid. It feels like we are decoding a language that you have known all along. You will walk away feeling capable of playing anything you hear in your head.
