About Roman
My name is Roman Kobeletskiy and I am an artist from Kazan, Russia. I graduated from the N. Feshin Kazan Art School in 2012, and immediately embarked on my own creative path.
As I began my journey, I worked mainly on landscapes as I transitioned from my thesis work, which contained five landscapes of Muslim mosques, painted en plein air. In those days, plein air oil paintings were the only acceptable means for me, no matter the season.
After seven years of pursuing my landscapes, now having a couple of personal exhibitions under my belt, I became deeply interested in portraiture. By coincidence, my newfound interest happened to align with the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, I reexamined my drawing abilities and the knowledge I had acquired in school to begin drawing portraits. At first, I drew only in charcoal, and later decided to add some color. The question I was faced with was, which tools should I use to combine speed, simplicity and quality? The medium which answered that question for me was oil pastels.
Now after five years of practice, I have found it to be the best material for indoor painting in terms of color. Just like charcoal, oil pastel has a great potential to capture tone, in addition to its bright, wide palette of colors. Compared to watercolor, it proves to be simpler and more effective in solving tonal problems for beginners, which is also inherently valuable for professional artists. Oil pastels are also a good preparatory tool on the way to mastering oil painting
