About Kirsten
In addition to teaching French, I work as a composer and conductor in Europe, running my rehearsals in English or French.
My approach to language begins with placing confidence into the hands of the student, to take autonomy and experience small wins of mastery each week. This is my approach to music as a professor, and I find that for mastering pronunciation and vocabulary, this is vital.
I take a do-learn-do approach, meaning that every element of my teaching starts with a practical approach, followed by the surrounding theory and grammar, before re-integrating as a practical approach in preparation for the following session.
I believe that autonomy and creativity are vital for success in learning and mastering a language, whether this is for fun, as an additional study from a young age, or for high school exams.

I offer lessons tailored to reflect the structure of my music classes. Language is a skillset, as much as a means of expression. In my lessons, we focus on a balance between the practical pronunciation and relevant ways to navigate a conversation, alongside the theories for building sentence structures and deepening conversation.
My primary aim is to offer students the confidence to embrace the language and to maintain a sense of curiosity. Language involves a logical approach to understand the foundations and build skills - but it is also vital to maintain a sense of creativity to converse and to discover new elements of the self during the lessons.
This ripples into an understanding of vocabulary, grammar, listening and comprehension. Language is taught with the same approach as music to build confidence and competence in equal measure.
About me: I studied Advanced French at UNSW, and have lived in Paris since 2020. Most of my life is spent in French, and I believe that there is a really interesting bridge that can be offered to English speakers from someone whose primarily language is also English.
I sat my C2 exam in 2014 - although it has expired, I will be re-sitting my exam in a few months, so my in-depth studies of grammar, comprehension and all things exam-oriented is shared with my students.
My lessons are for all ages. If you are equal to or above C2 (the highest level of fluency) I would recommend learning with a native French speaker to understand all of the nuances. For all other levels between absolute beginner and advanced, let's work together!
