Typically I will work on a plan with students to get to 'where they want'. Many of the younger ones will take ABRSM or similar exams whereas the older ones tend to work more on personal goals such as developing Jazz improv or mastering fingerstyle arrangements from the likes of Tommy Emmanuel. We usually keep a practice diary and outline weekly tasks to help keep track of progress.
