About Katrina
Katrina Zemrak is an award-winning composer renowned for her diverse body of work, which includes over fifty short films, multiple podcasts and television series, and three feature films. Her standout feature film compositions include Two Lives In Pittsburgh, which won the 2023 Audience Award at Dances with Films in LA, and the animated musical fairy tale Bongee Bear and the Kingdom of Rhythm, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2019 Palm Springs Animation Convention. She also composed and supervised full post-production audio services for the Emmy-winning series The Chronicles of Jessica Wu. Katrina’s expertise extends beyond composition. She has provided sound design for a wide range of projects, including short films, commercials, feature films, documentaries, and podcasts such as Earthbreak, History Daily, American Scandal, Business Movers, Tides of History, and American Criminal. In 2022, she was awarded “Best Sound Design” by the Indie Short Fest in Los Angeles for her work on the horror short film The Mannequin Man, directed by Kip Knight. Her educational background includes a Master of Fine Arts in Music Composition for the Screen from Columbia College Chicago, which she completed in 2017 with a full-ride scholarship. That same year, she attended the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, having received a scholarship from the Game Audio Network Guild. From 2019 to 2022, Katrina worked as a music editor, sound designer, and additional composer for Nickelodeon’s The Casagrandes and The Loud House, as well as for Nickelodeon’s animated pilots program. Additionally, she served as a music copyist and Pro Tools engineer for the Apple TV series Lady in the Lake. In 2022, she collaborated with Unbridled Sound and director Boaz Yakin on the feature dance film Once Again, enriching the project with dialogue editing and sound design to achieve a more musical flow. Katrina’s contributions to the film scoring community have been recognized with several accolades. In 2015, she received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the California Independent Film Festival for her role as Chair of the International Film Scoring Competition. She was honored with the Allen Turner Award from Columbia College Chicago in 2014 for her original bassoon piece An Erratic State of Mind. Additionally, in 2013, she earned the Leadership Award from Columbia College Chicago for founding ScoFi (Score & Film), an organization dedicated to educating and networking student film composers with filmmakers and hosting guest speakers such as Eimear Noone and Craig Stuart Garfinkle. Katrina’s compositions have been performed by leading orchestras in Los Angeles and Chicago, and her piece Many, Many Clementines was broadcast by Chicago’s classical radio station, WFMT, in 2014.

I am currently only able to teach lessons via online, as I am in the middle of moving. You will need to have access to Pro Tools or Logic if you would like to learn within your home space. I love teaching via a hands on approach, meaning that you will be the one working within Logic or Pro Tools while I sit next to you and guide you on how to utilize these tools in order to create your own music via recording live or with virtual instruments.
A typical beginner lesson plan consists of learning simple tasks within the DAW in order to create a simple song, and can extend into mixing your own music as well. If you are interested in film scoring specifically, a short project will be available for you to score and we will discuss the spotting process, what instrumentation to use, and how to mix to picture.
I have experience working with Nickelodeon as a composer and music editor, and have composed for over 50 short films, a handful of feature films, and a handful of podcasts. I love talking about music and the process of it all and try to make it so anyone can understand!
Lessons are for any level- preferably beginners or intermediates.

I found Katrina online while looking for a teacher to help me take my Logic Pro skills to a much higher level. I'm an adult musician and composer/arranger who has taught privately for many years, so my expectations of resources I choose for myself are very high. And Katrina is the real deal. I've learned so much from her in a short period of time! She knows her stuff, including how to teach concepts and demonstrate and reinforce them on a practical level. Plus, she's a pleasure. I recommend her most highly to students and professionals alike.
Katrina is a world-class producer and musician. I've collaborated with her on multiple projects and seriously find myself in awe each time over what she can do to a music track--it's like wizardry!! I highly recommend Katrina if you want to learn ANYTHING about music production, from the basics all the way to those special final-touches that make a track sound like it belongs on TV or the radio. Hire her immediately!
Katrina is an incredibly talented performer, songwriter, recording engineer, and all-around musician who clearly communicates concepts and ideas for people of any musical skill level. Katrina is a patient, kind, and friendly presence who understands music on a deep level and knows the best practices for teaching musical concepts. I would highly recommend Katrina to anyone who is excited to learn more about music composition, recording & DAWs, music technology, the film & music industries, or bass guitar/the many instruments that she plays on an expert level.
