About Leyla

Do you ever feel like you struggle with writing an essay? Do you dread that moment your teacher or professor asks you to write yet another essay to prove to them that you learned from the class? Maybe you feel like you have ideas but don't quite know how to express them. Or, perhaps you struggle with word counts, being concise, and getting straight to the point. Or, maybe it's the opposite: you stare at a blank page without knowing where to start. You might have hundreds of tabs open but have no idea how to organize your research and outline it in a structured way. That's where I come in. As an educator, writer, journalist, podcast producer, and proofreader with over ten years of experience, writing comes as second nature to me. I also chose degrees where we were constantly drilled with essays and figured out exactly how to structure them in a way that got my message across. I have a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from SOAS, University of London, and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University. I also completed the International Baccalaureate program in high school and took higher-level English, History, Biology, and Art. English and History are where I excel the most. I understand what it means to tell a story, to do so convincingly, and, most importantly, how to think of suitable examples and cite the right sources when drafting essays. I have award-winning publishing experience and a deep understanding of academia and essay writing. I also have experience telling stories for audio, public speaking, presentations, and other channels and mediums. If any of this resonates with you, please contact me.

Please note the following: My baseline charge per hour is $60/hr for baseline tutoring, such as ESL or English, at the high school level. More specialized or higher-level tutoring, such as in adult education, at the graduate or postgraduate level, or for professional development, will come at an additional cost per hour and truly depends on the subject. I charge an extra $6 to cover transportation for in-person tutoring within NYC. I charge an extra $6 to cover transportation for in-person tutoring within NYC. I also charge higher after 6 pm and on weekends as well. Last-minute cancellations also will not be refunded.

About the lesson

I believe in teaching that is proactive and a two-way conversation. I use the Socratic Method, questioning, and active participation. I'm also a firm believer in tailoring my teaching methods to different learning styles, whether for visual, auditory, or kinetic learners. This means adapting my methods based on every student and mixing my lessons with various mediums. As a journalist, I understand what it means to tell engaging stories and apply these same methods in my teaching, whether studying through text, visuals (such as photos and videos), card games, podcasts, or kinetic learning. I also make my lessons exciting and include examples and anecdotes to make them engaging. My lessons apply to A.P. or I.B. high school students, college students, and professionals looking to improve their writing, prose, public speaking, and storytelling skills.
