About Dave
I started learning the Highland bagpipes when I was 11 years old and have played them for 40 years, both in pipe bands and also independently as part of a Celtic band the past 10 years. I also have branched out to bellows-blown Scottish smallpipes and Lowland pipes for the past 8 years. I am traditional in my approach, focusing primarily on accurate fingering which is the most important and challenging aspect of piping. I teach what I was taught years ago: "Never play it faster than you can play it correctly." I can teach both beginners with no musical background, to pipers who are already experienced but seeking to improve their piping abilities for competition or for simply enjoyment, because the better you can play, the more you'll enjoy playing and honor the instrument's heritage.

I use the National Piping Centre (formerly College of Piping) Tutor Book series as my primary instruction material, along with certain exercises I've developed myself to help students both hear their fingering errors as well as correct them. My lessons are typically one hour long, though they can be shorter or longer depending on the wishes of the student. A typical lesson focuses primarily on introducing and improving fingering on the practice chanter, and if the student is ready to step up to a full set of pipes, I make sure we save time to work on that as well.
