About Maya

Maya has been performing on bass for over 18 years. As a gigging musician she has played pop, rock, punk, disco, funk, R&B, musical theater, jazz, classical, Brazilian styles, country, folk, and more. For seven years she played with Future Teens, an indie rock band from Boston, MA. With the band she toured all over the US, as well as multiple tours in the UK and Europe, and recorded three LPs, two EPs, and a live EP at Audiotree. Maya attended Berklee College of Music for bass performance, where she earned the Bass Department Outstanding Performer Award and Scholarship, and had the opportunity to perform at Symphony Hall with the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. She also holds a BA in English and French from Skidmore College.
Maya teaches both guitar and bass, with experience as an instructor at Millbrook School in Millbrook, NY, and Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT, where she taught for three years. While in Boston, she volunteered with Girls Rock Camp Boston as a band coach and instrument instructor, and maintained a private teaching roster.

About the lesson

I love to connect with students and support their love of music. I create a positive, open learning environment by tailoring lessons to individual student goals and learning styles. My goal as a teacher is for you to have a solid foundation of skills and knowledge in order to play the music you love and express yourself freely on the instrument. I use my background as a working musician to ground lessons in real-world application, and to help students develop realistic, consistent practice routines.

Perfect! I (22) have had a lot of music teachers over the course of my life, and Maya is one of my favorites! Her teaching methods have been very effective for me when it comes to enabling me to play songs I like. However, I requested that we focus our sessions on theory. Maya is so knowledgable about music theory and has very engaging methods for teaching it. She's also just a really cool person, we have a good time during our lessons. I started with in person lessons, but I've been doing virtual ones since the school year has resumed and I live on the east coast. Anyways, Maya is amazing!
