About Rachel

The smell of rosin and old cedar wood pulled me into the world of folk music during my early college years. I spent those days listening to elders who carried tunes in their heads rather than on paper. My teaching is rooted in oral tradition where tunes are learned by listening and ornamentation by imitation.

These methods have served me well across 5 years of private instruction. I enjoy working with everyone from beginners drawn to bluegrass to experienced classical players wanting to loosen up. It is a joy to share this musical language that has defined my life.

About the lesson

Formal sight reading matters far less than your internal sense of rhythm and timing in a real jam session. I find that many players who start with rigid classical repertoire eventually crave the freedom of authentic folk music.

Drawing on my BA in Folk Music, I focus on the balance between technical precision and fluid musicality. We will systematically cover posture and hold, grade exam prep for ABRSM or Trinity, and the subtle art of double stops. You will discover how to translate your classical training into a spontaneous, vibrant style that works for any ensemble. After each lesson, I provide free bowing and posture reference notes to guide your independent practice sessions.

My approach ensures you walk into any jam environment ready to hold your own with confidence. Mastering the instrument is ultimately about finding your own voice through the patterns we study. I am here to help you bridge the gap between technical skill and genuine expression. You will leave every session feeling more connected to the tradition of your instrument.
