About Sebastian
Hi! I'm Sebastian, a Berkeley undergraduate studying Philosophy and Japanese, with a minor in Digital Humanities. I was born and raised in Japan, attending Japanese schools through my freshman year of high school before continuing my education in the U.S.
After living in Japan most of my life, I have gained tons of practical experience when it comes to Japanese language and culture. I hope that I can use my background to further your Japanese studies and also have fun in the process!!

Hello! My name is Sebastian / セバスチャン！
I am a bilingual UC Berkeley student studying Philosophy and Japanese. I grew up in Okinawa, Japan, and attended traditional Japanese school up until my freshman year of high school. I am looking for students who are passionate about Japan and excited to speak the language. I hope I can use my background to create a fun learning environment.
I am a firm believer in that true fluency comes from conversation. Learning the characters is of course important, but I hope to give my students a chance to put that to use. I will structure lessons around conversations you would have in your day-to-day life.

A Typical Lesson
Warm-up: casual conversation in Japanese, adjusted to your level
Focused practice: a specific conversational scenario or grammar point pulled from real usage
Kanji/vocabulary building (if desired): practical study techniques.
Wrap-up: natural review through dialogue, plus a small "homework" conversation topic to think about before next time
For students who want to learn Kanji - I will give lessons I learned myself throughout my schooling in Japan to hopefully make your studying more efficient.
Lessons are open to anyone who wants to improve — beginners, intermediate, or advanced students who want to polish conversational skills. Whether you're studying for a class, prepping for travel, or just want to have someone to speak to, I will tailor my lessons according to your skills.
