My ultimate teaching philosophy is that it is more important to understand a concept rather than to memorize a bunch of facts. My typical lesson plan for sessions is to first asses prior knowledge, then move onto the actually tutoring portion and explaining key concepts. Then I like to include a guided then independent practice and end the session with a quick summary of everything they learned.
