My Approach to Teaching ASL
I believe learning ASL should be practical, engaging, and centered around real communication not just memorizing vocabulary. My goal is to help students feel comfortable using ASL in everyday situations while developing a strong understanding of Deaf culture and the diversity within the Deaf community.
I tailor each lesson to the student's goals, experience, and learning style. For beginners, I focus on foundational vocabulary, fingerspelling, sentence structure, facial expressions, and basic conversational skills. As students progress, we can work on more natural conversation, comprehension, storytelling, and expanding vocabulary.
A typical lesson may include a short review of previous material, introduction of new signs or concepts, guided practice, and conversation activities. I also incorporate visual examples, repetition, role-playing, and interactive exercises so students have opportunities to actually use what they are learning.
One thing that sets me apart is my perspective as a BIPOC ASL tutor and my knowledge of Black ASL (BASL). I can help students understand that ASL is not one size fits all and that signing can vary across communities and cultures. I want my students to learn ASL in a way that is both linguistically meaningful and culturally respectful.
My lessons are suitable for beginners, students who are already taking ASL classes and want additional practice, individuals learning ASL for personal or professional reasons, and anyone who wants to become more confident communicating with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Most importantly, I create a supportive environment where students can make mistakes, ask questions, and learn at their own pace.
