About Laurie

33-year old fun, loving, nurturing and dedicated teacher who loves children. Currently completing a degree in music with specialization in pedagogy. Future plans include specialized training in early childhood education and teaching methods from Dalcroze, Orff and Kodály as well as training at Central (Specialized) Music Schools. Previous teaching experiences of over 7 years include at state funded schools and music community project. I believe the future rests in the younger generation. Whitney Houston quoted "I believe the children are our future; Teach them well and let them lead the way; Show them all the beauty they possess inside..." Therefore, as a teacher and mentor, it is my responsibility to guide and instill a well-rounded education. For everything is said and done to the young will become a legacy. This is why being a teacher is one of the most humble, self-giving and humane role one engages in society. I am humble and grateful to be part of a lineage of musicians who have uphold long-standing traditions from Europe. A good teacher is accountable to pass on those values to the next generation thus ensuring a continuity of holistic education in a sustainable environment.

About the lesson

My violin lessons are tailored according to the student’s need. I used the Suzuki method (Japanese) for 7 years when teaching beginners. My youngest student was 5 years. I studied with teachers trained in France and Moscow. Therefore, I tend to blend different systems (old and new traditions from different countries) in my pedagogical practice. A typical lesson for a beginner would focus on developing the aural (listening) skills necessary for musicianship. As the student progresses, more emphasis will be put on technical mastery as a guide to aesthetic interpretation and artistic performance. Music theory lessons are aimed at developing the reading and music literacy skills. I also help in preparing my students for ABRSM/Trinity/UNISA examination but are not compulsory. All my students have successfully passed their exams, some received distinction. No prior training, aptitude test or audition are required before the first lesson. All my lessons are geared towards culturally responsive teaching.
