About Kate

Hi, I'm Kate! I'm a native Mandarin speaker who grew up speaking Chinese and now calls Johannesburg home. Learning a new language can feel overwhelming, but I'm here to make Mandarin approachable, practical and even enjoyable.
I am currently completing my university degree in Education, which means I don't just speak Mandarin — I understand how people learn languages and how to teach them effectively. I combine my native fluency with proper teaching methodology to give students the best of both worlds.
I am patient, encouraging and genuinely passionate about sharing my language and culture with others. Whether you are a complete beginner who doesn't know a single word, a professional wanting to communicate better with Chinese partners, or someone preparing for an HSK exam — I will meet you exactly where you are and help you get where you want to go.

About the lesson

As a native Mandarin speaker, I bring an authentic and immersive experience to every lesson that textbooks simply cannot replicate. My approach focuses on real conversational Mandarin from day one — so students actually sound natural, not robotic.
I tailor every lesson to the individual student's goals, whether that's casual conversation, business Mandarin, HSK exam preparation, or learning to read and write Chinese characters. No two students are the same, so no two lesson plans are the same.
What to expect in a typical lesson:

- Warm up with conversational practice
- Focus on a specific topic or skill (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar)
- Real life scenarios and roleplay exercises
- Recap and homework if needed

My lessons are relaxed, encouraging and pressure free as I believe confidence is built through practice not perfection. I teach in both English and Mandarin, switching between the two naturally to help students understand concepts clearly.
My lessons are suitable for absolute beginners all the way through to advanced learners, including professionals wanting Business Mandarin, students preparing for HSK exams, children, and heritage learners wanting to reconnect with the language.
