About Matthew

I'm a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with over 30 years of grappling experience—and 12 years of teaching students from all walks of life. My martial arts journey began at age 6 with judo, where I earned my brown belt before transitioning into no-gi jiu-jitsu under former UFC champ Carlos Newton and veteran Mark Bocek.

In my late teens, I shifted focus to traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and trained for several years under Cesar Rezek of Nova Uniao—one of the most respected teams in the world. I was awarded my black belt at their headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, the same mats that shaped legends like Jose Aldo and Renan Barao. I also spent nearly a year in Brasilia training under 1997 World Champion Joao Roque.

Beyond the mats, I co-founded Jits Magazine, one of the top jiu-jitsu media platforms in the world, with millions of views and a global audience. This has taken me across Brazil, Japan, Thailand, Abu Dhabi, and beyond—training, competing, and sharing the art of jiu-jitsu at every step.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, I bring a deep understanding of technique, strategy, and personalized coaching to every session. My goal is to help you build confidence, sharpen your game, and enjoy the journey.

About the lesson

I offer private Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lessons in many parts of the GTA.

Each session is tailored to your individual goals—whether you're training for fitness, self-defense, or preparing for competition. Just let me know what you want to work on, and we’ll build the path together.

What a Typical Lesson Can Include:

- Mobility warm-up to get your body moving
- Technical breakdowns tailored to your skill level
- Sparring/rolling (light or intense—your call)
- Fitness & conditioning components if requested

Every class is adaptable—some students prefer pure technique, others want to train hard and sweat. You decide.

Who Can Train?

Absolutely anyone.

I've worked with students as young as toddlers and as experienced as senior citizens. Age, weight, flexibility, fitness level—it doesn’t matter. Jiu-jitsu meets you where you are.

Perfect! Matthew was very knowledgeable in his discipline. He was efficient in his training and patient with a rookie like myself. I had a bunch of questions which he answered clearly. After we finished the session I felt more confident in my BJJ and I know that he can teach me a lot more.
