About Ken
Hi, I'm Ken!
I'm 47 years old and a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo, with a background in traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu and practical self-defense.
PLEASE WATCH VIDEO AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PROFILE TO GET AN IDEA!
My approach to teaching is what I call **Survival Brazilian Jiu Jitsu** — a practical, self-defense-focused approach that places particular emphasis on protecting yourself, surviving disadvantaged positions, escaping an opponent's control and getting safely back to your feet.
While I enjoy the technical side of grappling, I believe Jiu Jitsu is about much more than learning submissions or winning competitions. It's about understanding balance, leverage, timing, positioning and how to use those principles when someone is actively resisting.
My teaching brings together the ground-grappling skills of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Judo's throws, takedowns and off-balancing principles. I focus on how these skills work together, from standing encounters through to ground control, escapes and submissions.
Having trained in martial arts over many years, I've developed an appreciation for efficient movement and sound technique rather than relying on strength or athleticism alone.
My professional background has also included working with people in challenging situations. Those experiences have reinforced my belief that good self-defense isn't about looking for a fight. It's about awareness, remaining composed under pressure, understanding your options and knowing when to avoid, de-escalate or escape a confrontation.
**How I teach**
I enjoy breaking techniques down and explaining not just how they work, but why they work. I believe that understanding the principles behind Jiu Jitsu helps students develop skills they can adapt to different situations rather than simply memorizing movements.
I also incorporate controlled resistance drills, allowing students to progressively develop their timing, positional awareness and ability to respond when a technique doesn't go exactly as planned.
My lessons are friendly, patient and tailored to the individual. You don't need to be particularly fit, strong, flexible or have any previous martial arts experience to get started.
Whether you're completely new to Jiu Jitsu, returning after a break, or already practicing martial arts and wanting to improve your ground grappling and self-defense skills, I'd be happy to help.
**My goal is simple: to teach you good, practical Jiu Jitsu that you understand, can develop confidence in and can apply responsibly when it matters.**
I look forward to training with you!

Hi, I'm Ken!
I'm a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo, specializing in what I call **Survival Brazilian Jiu Jitsu** — a practical, self-defense-focused approach to grappling.
Unlike competition-focused training, my emphasis is on learning how to protect yourself, survive disadvantaged positions, escape from an opponent's control and safely return to your feet.
My teaching combines the ground-grappling principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the standing throws, off-balancing and positional control of Judo and traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu.
I believe effective Jiu Jitsu isn't simply about memorizing techniques. It's about understanding balance, leverage, timing and how to respond when someone genuinely resists.
Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to martial arts or simply looking to learn practical self-defense, my lessons are personalized to your experience, physical abilities and goals.
My aim is to make Jiu Jitsu approachable, enjoyable and technically meaningful, helping you develop genuine grappling skills and confidence in a friendly, supportive environment.
